  • Baby (musical)

Baby is a musical with a book by Sybille Pearson, based on a story developed with Susan Yankowitz, music by David Shire, and lyrics by Richard Maltby, Jr.. It concerns the reactions of three couples each expecting a child. The musical first ran on Broadway from 1983 to 1984.

    Synopsis

Three couples, each newly expecting a child, have different but familiar reactions. Lizzie and Danny are university juniors who have just moved in together. Athletic Pam and her husband, Nick, a sports instructor, have had some trouble conceiving. Arlene, already the mother of three grown daughters, is unsure of what to do, contemplating abortion while her husband Alan is thrilled with the thought of a new baby. Throughout the show, these characters experience the emotional stresses and triumphs, the desperate lows and the comic highs, that accompany the anticipation and arrival of a baby.

    Musical numbers

"Baby, Baby, Baby (Reprise)" was replaced in the initial run and the original cast recording with the song "Patterns," wherein Arlene contemplates her circular life as mother and wife.

    Virginian and Ohio

The Virginian and Ohio is both the name of a fictional railroad company created by W. Allen McClelland and the HO scale model railroad he built featuring this railroad. The V&O is famous in the model railroading world for setting a new standard for freelanced (fictional) model railroads designed to operate in a prototypical manner and was a major influence upon many model railroaders of the time. In 1984, Mr. McClelland wrote a detailed guide to the construction and operation of the railroad.

    Model railroad

The original V&O was built in 1962 and was set in the 1950s. The railroad operated from Afton, VA to Elm Grove, VA. In the mid 1970s, Allen McClelland began a second phase of construction that expanded the railroad from Elm Grove to Kingswood Junction, VA. McClelland was very interested in actual prototype running so the railroad constantly moved forward in time. For example, in 1980 (1958 on the railroad), the V&O ran the last of its steam locomotives and switched entirely to diesel. Allen then moved the timeframe of the railroad to 1968. In the late 1990s, the railroad was expanded one final time and was updated to 1975.

    Sodium decavanadate

Sodium decavanadate describes any member of the family of inorganic compounds with the formula Na6[V10O28](H2O)n. These are sodium salts of the orange-colored decavanadate anion [V10O28]6−. Numerous other decavanadate salts have been isolated and studied since 1956 when it was first characterized.

    Preparation

The preparation of decavanadate is achieved by acidifying an aqueous solution of ortho-vanadate:

The formation of decavanadate is optimized by maintaining a pH range of 4–7. Typical side products include metavanadate, [VO3], and hexavanadate, [V6O16]2−, ions.

    Structure

The decavanadate ion consists of 10 fused VO6 octahedra and has D2h symmetry. The structure of Na6[V10O28]·18H2O has been confirmed with X-ray crystallography.

The decavanadate anions contains three sets of equivalent V atoms (see fig. 1). These include two central VO6 octahedra (Vc) and four each peripheral tetragonal-pyramidal VO5 groups (Va and Vb). There are seven unique groups of oxygen atoms (labeled A through G). Two of these (A) bridge to six V centers, four (B) bridge three V centers, fourteen of these (C, D and E) span edges between pairs of V centers, and eight (F and G) are peripheral.

    Vanadium(V) oxide

Vanadium(V) oxide (vanadia) is the inorganic compound with the formula V2O5. Commonly known as vanadium pentoxide, it is a brown/yellow solid, although when freshly precipitated from aqueous solution, its colour is deep orange. Because of its high oxidation state, it is both an amphoteric oxide and an oxidizing agent. From the industrial perspective, it is the most important compound of vanadium, being principal precursor to alloys of vanadium and is a widely used industrial catalyst.

The mineral form of this compound, shcherbinaite, is extremely rare, almost always found among fumaroles. A mineral trihydrate, V2O5·3H2O, is also known under the name of navajoite.

    Chemical properties

Upon heating, it reversibly loses oxygen, successively forming V2O4, V2O3, VO and the metal.

    Acid-base reactions

Unlike most metal oxides, it dissolves slightly in water to give a pale yellow, acidic solution. When this compound is formed by V2O5 it is an amphoteric oxide. Thus :V2O5 reacts with strong non-reducing acids to form solutions containing the pale yellow salts containing dioxovanadium(V) centers:
