"Outshined" is a song by the American rock band Soundgarden. Written by frontman Chris Cornell, "Outshined" was released in 1991 as the second single from the band's third studio album, Badmotorfinger (1991). The song was included on Soundgarden's 1997 greatest hits album, A-Sides, the 2010 compilation album, Telephantasm and the live album Live on I-5.
"Outshined" was written by frontman Chris Cornell. It features an opening guitar riff and is performed in drop D tuning. The verses are in 7/4 time, an unorthodox meter, common of some Soundgarden songs, such as "Spoonman", which is in 7/4, "Fell on Black Days", which is in 6/4, and "My Wave", which is in 5/4. Guitarist Kim Thayil has said that Soundgarden usually did not consider the time signature of a song until after the band had written it, and said that the use of odd meters was "a total accident."
In an interview, Cornell said, "I've never really been biographical in my lyrics, so when I wrote a line like "I'm looking California and feeling Minnesota" from "Outshined", it just felt refreshing." Cornell on the song:
I got up feeling so down
I got off being sold out
I've kept the movie rolling
But the story's getting old now
I just looked in the mirror
And things aren't looking so good
I'm looking California
And feeling Minnesota
So now you know
(Who gets mystified)
So now you know
(Who gets mystified)
Show me the power child, I'd like to say
That I'm down on my knees today
It gives me the butterflies, gives me away
'Til I'm up on my feet again
I'm feeling, I?m feeling
Outshined, outshined, outshined, outshined
Someone let the dogs out
They'll show you where the truth is
The grass is always greener
Where the dogs are shedding
I'm feeling that I'm sober
Even though I'm drinking
I can't get any lower
Still I feel I'm sinking
So now you know
(Who gets mystified)
So now you know
(Who gets mystified)
Show me the power child, I'd like to say
That I'm down on my knees today
It gives me the butterflies, gives me away
'Til I'm up on my feet again
I'm feeling, I?m feeling
Outshined, outshined, outshined, outshined
Outshined
So now you know
(Who gets mystified)
Show me the power child, I'd like to say
That I'm down on my knees today
It gives me the butterflies, gives me away
'Til I'm up on my feet again
I'm feeling, I?m feeling
Show me the power child, I'd like to say
That I'm down on my knees today
It gives me the butterflies, gives me away
'Til I'm up on my feet again
I'm feeling, I?m feeling
