Dimension (data warehouse)

A dimension is a structure that categorizes facts and measures in order to enable users to answer business questions. Commonly used dimensions are people, products, place and time.

In a data warehouse, dimensions provide structured labeling information to otherwise unordered numeric measures. The dimension is a data set composed of individual, non-overlapping data elements. The primary functions of dimensions are threefold: to provide filtering, grouping and labelling.

These functions are often described as "slice and dice". Slicing refers to filtering data. Dicing refers to grouping data. A common data warehouse example involves sales as the measure, with customer and product as dimensions. In each sale a customer buys a product. The data can be sliced by removing all customers except for a group under study, and then diced by grouping by product.

A dimensional data element is similar to a categorical variable in statistics.

Typically dimensions in a data warehouse are organized internally into one or more hierarchies. "Date" is a common dimension, with several possible hierarchies:

Dimension (shampoo)

Dimension Shampoo was a heavily perfumed shampoo product, which was produced in the early 1980s. This was by the personal products division of Lever Brothers, and marketed by Ogilvy. The shampoo came in a distinctive dark yellow bottle, and left a strong muskone and civetone aroma on the hair. There was also a companion conditioner marketed with this product. It has been stated by many previous users of dimension shampoo that it caused their hair to fall out, due to the extreme astringency of the product.

On April 18, 1985, Lever Brothers reorganized their marketing structure and moved their personal products division business to J. Walter Thompson.

At the time, Dimension was a highly popular brand. (Lever spent an estimated $12.5M in advertising the brand in 1984.) However, shortly after Lever's marketing reorganization, Dimension ran-out on store shelves, and never returned. Lever Brothers never made any public explanation for the disappearance of the product; although they referred to the marketing reorganization as a consolidation of the personal products brands, and stated that the decision in-part had to do with its plans for international marketing.

One-dimensional space

In physics and mathematics, a sequence of n numbers can be understood as a location in n-dimensional space. When n = 1, the set of all such locations is called a one-dimensional space. An example of a one-dimensional space is the number line, where the position of each point on it can be described by a single number.

One-dimensional geometry

Lines

The real number line and the real projective line are one-dimensional, though the latter is homeomorphic to a circle.

In algebraic geometry there are several structures which are technically one-dimensional spaces but referred to in other terms. For a field k, it is a one-dimensional vector space over itself. Similarly, the projective line over k is a one-dimensional space. In particular, if k = ℂ, the complex number plane, then the complex projective line P1(ℂ) is one-dimensional with respect to ℂ, even if it is also known as the Riemann sphere.

More generally, a ring is a length-one module over itself. Similarly, the projective line over a ring is a one-dimensional space over the ring. In case the ring is an algebra over a field, these spaces are one-dimensional with respect to the algebra, even if the algebra is of higher dimensionality.

Escape (2012 Norwegian film)

Escape (Norwegian: Flukt) is a 2012 action-thriller film directed by Roar Uthaug. It stars Isabel Christine Andreasen and Milla Olin as girls in 14th century Norway who must escape bandits led by Ingrid Bolsø Berdal. It premiered at the Slash Film Festival and was released in Norway in September 2012.

Plot

In fourteenth century Norway, 19-year-old Signe, her younger brother, and her parents travel through lands made dangerous by the lawlessness following the Black Death. Bandits led by Dagmar kill her entire family; Dagmar herself murders Signe's brother as she watches helplessly. Before the bandits can kill Signe, Dagmar stops them and orders them to take her prisoner. At their camp, Signe meets Frigg, a young girl that Dagmar has adopted. When Frigg shows kindness to Signe, Dagmar chastises her and says that Signe deserves no compassion, as her people have driven them to banditry.

Arvid, Dagmar's lover, stops Loke from raping Signe. As the others watch Arvid and Loke fight, Signe strains to recover Loke's dropped knife. Frigg notices and alerts Dagmar, who tasks Frigg with Signe's punishment, cutting off a finger. When Signe calls Dagmar a witch, Dagmar gloats that she will soon allow the men to rape Signe, as she wants Frigg to have a younger sister. Instead of cutting off Signe's finger, Frigg frees her. As the others sleep, the two girls sneak out of the camp. The bandits wake and give chase, though Signe and Frigg evade them in the nearby forest.

  • Escape (video game)

Escape is an early ZX Spectrum video game developed and released by New Generation Software in 1982.

"Can you ESCAPE from the monsters? You must search through the maze to find the axe which will enable you to break down the door and ESCAPE. But it is not that easy - the Triceratops hides behind the hedges and the Pteranodon soars over the maze to swoop down upon you"

    The game

The player has to search a maze displayed in primitive 3D for an axe, which will allow him to break the exit, and escape. He is chased by initially a single monster - each successful escape increases the number of monsters roaming the maze, until level 6, which introduces a Pterosaur that will occasionally take off and fly over the hedges, not being restricted to the maze paths.

Upon finding the axe, which is randomly placed for each level, the player speed slows down allowing the monsters to catch up.
