Pan Horned Goat Masquerade Mask. Halloween/Mardi Gras/Masquerade/Costume Party

Hand made Masquerade mask created in the Venetian style papier-mâché technique. Impressively horned mask accented with Swarovski crystals, dichroic glass and natural gems. Painted black with brown and gold accents. Lined in hypoallergenic stretch velvet for comfort and fastens with grosgrain ribbons. A stunning piece for any masking occasion or for a great conversation piece when displayed. Inspired by Pan, the Greek God of the wild, shepherds and flocks and taking the form of a horned goat. The horns on this piece are made independently from the mask form from layers of paper and plaster applied to a wire frame. Technique: My technique for creating masks is similar to that practiced by the Venetian mask makers. I sculpt the subject then create a negative mold by pouring plaster over the clay sculpture. Once the mold dries, I remove the clay and am left with a negative mold. This negative mold is what is use to create the actual mask form. The process involves lubricating the mold with petroleum jelly, laying in strips of paper dipped into a special blend of plaster and adhesive, then pressing it into the mold. After adding several layers, the form is left to dry. Once dry, the form is released from the mold, gesso is applied, then the form is ready for detail, paint and embellishments.
