Southern photography

The 1950’s are often viewed as a golden era in U.S. history, a time of happiness and prosperity, despite the threat of nuclear annihilation, racial segregation and the looming Cold War.

Photographer Roger May was born in the Tug River Valley on the West Virginia/Kentucky border. His soon-to-be published "Testify" is, he says, "a visual love letter to Appalachia, the land of my blood. This is my testimony of how I came to see the importance of home and my connection to place."

Nostalgia is denial. Denial of the painful present. The name for this denial is Golden Age thinking - the erroneous notion that a different time period is better than the one ones living in - its a flaw in the romantic imagination of those people who find it difficult to cope with the present - Midnight In Paris
