Originally, it was used as a practical stitch to give structure and elasticity to the simple-cut, woven garments of the period, as well as giving labour workers better movement in their clothes. The name Smock comes from the garments it was used on, and thus the name stuck with the stitch. Later, smocking acquired a more decorative nature, on cuffs, neck lines, waist lines and more. The hight of its popularity came with the 18th and 19th century, but continued being a decorative detail all the way up to the 1970s. #sewing #sewingreels #smocking #slowfashion #fashion #fashiondesigner #fashionhistory #sewingtutorial" How To Do Smocking Tutorials, How To Smock Fabric, Hand Smocking Tutorial, Diy Smock, Honeycomb Smocking, Woven Garments, Smocking Fashion, Pleats Techniques, English Smocking

Sveta on Instagram: "I was going to share this smocking tutorial earlier, but always postponed and didn’t know if I should show whole process or just sewing part. Then I decided to make it together with pattern. I used a yoke part of basic shirt , it’s more complicated because of round neckline. For example, if you apply it for the sleeves bottom or others straight edge parts, you no need to cut original pattern for thousands slices, but for the curve edge you have to move every pleat. Another important thing is that your pleat width should be same size as the space between, I made it in 1cm. Smocking pattern and how you fix it depends of your imagination, there are different ways and styles, I just share mine. #smockingdress #sewingtutorials #isewmyownclothes #memadewardrobe #modernsew Round Yoke Dress Pattern, Pleated Neckline Pattern, Smocking Patterns Tutorials, Smocking Sleeves, Sewing Pleats, Recycling Textiles, Pattern Making Fashion, Basic Shirts Pattern, Smock Dress Pattern

Sometimes I assume everyone knows how to do it. But then I get another email asking how to shir (or smock) fabric. So it reminds me I shouldn’t assume…………..because it is …
