I recommend Numberphile, which introduces mathematical ideas of various sorts and is aimed at a general audience. I most especially recommend the videos featuring Dr. James Grimes, but most of the others are good too. Don't bother watching the wretched ones about logarithms unless you want a lesson on how not to explain something.
For math fans and especially people interested in mathematics education, Victoria "Vihart" Hart makes some really amazing videos relating to mathematics in various ways. Most of them go by too quickly to be good for people trying to learn about a subject for the first time, but they give some very interesting ideas about how one might teach those subjects. Her Green Bean Matherole video, on the other hand, is a very good introduction to the idea of a vector field.

I recently pulled some corned beef out of the refrigerator, intending to make a sandwich. Unfortunately, when I smelled it, it didn't smell right. In fact, it smelled revolting. When my mother, with a declining sense of smell, smelled it, she thought it smelled fine. I am very curious whether electronic noses have gotten good enough these days to detect spoiled food.

Apr. 20th, 2013 06:57 pmA thick vine climbs up the tree, around and around.
The way its bark cracks seems almost to trace spirals along its length.
A thick braid of narrower vines twist down from a branch high above,
some of them shooting off thin branches with small, pointed leaves.
But something is a bit odd: the big vine climbing up the tree has been cut off.
Its base and root are nowhere to be found.

Power outage
Jul. 4th, 2012 12:27 amI haven't had any electricity since Friday. It's now (just barely) Wednesday. I still have no idea when we'll get power back. I'm particularly frustrated by the fact that the streetlight across from our house is the very first one that's darkājust about all the houses I pass on the way home have gotten their power back. I'm sure a big part of the problem is a huge tree that fell down up the block and knocked down the power lines. I suspect they may consider the job of getting rid of that tree too time-consuming to be worth tying up a crew when they have so many other outages they can fix more quickly, but don't think they can work around the tree to fix the power lines. I don't really know, however. In other news, a giant limb of the giant oak in our back yard broke off in the storm and fell over, but didn't manage to fall down. So we have a tree-sized branch (I'm guessing 100-200lb) just resting up in the tree. It's a tad scary, though I don't think it will fall. The thing that's most annoying about all of this is all the food that I'll have to throw away.
Captions and gender
Aug. 2nd, 2011 07:22 pmI've noticed that commercials often identify their spokesbot in the captions as "male announcer" or "female announcer". My first thought was that the announcer's gender (as guessed by the captionist) is generally irrelevant, and that identifying it is nothing but sexism. My second though was that gender is something that can often be guessed from voice timbre, and therefore a good captionist should indicate it to give their readers as much information as possible about the sounds. My third thought circled back around to the beginning: why gender? I don't see "announcer with Brooklyn accent", "announcer with Spanish accent", "announcer with soothing voice", or "loud, excited announcer", so why gender? I'd be interested in reading what others think about this.
The Mediterranean roasted vegetable sandwich from Cenan's bakery is a flavor explosion. Wow. I had them too often for a while and got sick of them, but thankfully I no longer am! FYI, I get mine without the cheese. The weather is incredibly beautiful today, so I took a short walk to/on/from the W&OD trail before lunch.

San Francisco
Nov. 16th, 2010 08:47 amDavid, Laura, and I met up, at various times, with each other, with Laura's old friend Zoe and her boyfriend, with fellow Tech Houser Tracey, with #yfqer Joshua, with Laura's less-old friend Nick, and very briefly with Tech Houser Mike and with Tracey's math people. We: went out to an awesome pizza place, boiled chestnuts, went exploring at Sutro Baths, drank pots and pots of tea, visited San Francisco's only full service pirate supply shop, and made exciting chocolate truffles (orange chili and almond-coconut-cardamom). Then Laura had to go home to get back to work. Now David and I are heading out to Yosemite for three days and two nights of backpacking. The biggest problem so far is that I forgot to take a camera to Sutro Baths.
Stock market woes

Profound thoughts for day one
May. 17th, 2009 08:05 pmThe colors on this dreamWIDTH site are horrible. I don't like pink. I also don't like the horrible maroonish color, whatever that's called.
