We start by selecting boards with similar grain patterns and colors tones. Shelves are made from clear oak cuttings. Assembled with wood screws, our copyrighted shelf designs insure that our shelves will remain straight with the passage of time. The high quality of our shelves is rarely seen. PLATE GROOVES: The Standard Plate Shelf ships with two default plate grooves. The grooves are 3/8 of an inch in width and have a round bottom. Grooves are centered 1-5/8 and 2-1/4 inches from the wall and stop 1 inch short of the shelf ends. We recommend standing a plate up at a slight display angle and measuring how far from the wall the ideal plate groove for your collection should be. There is no charge for custom plate groove placement. DISPLAY DEPTH: The Standard Plate Shelf has a depth of 3-1/2 inches. The usable display depth is 2 inches (The ¾ "spindle railing and the ¾"shelf back use 1-1/2 inches of the shelf depth). Large platters, deep dishes, and small collectibles such as Salt & Pepper Shakers, should be measured to see if they require more useable display depth. We do a significant amount of custom work and can make the shelf deeper if more display depth is required (We can also put the Back below the shelf). SECURITY EDGES: A Security Edge is a low profile oak molding which prevents a collectible from sliding off the shelf. The Edges provide unrestricted viewing of the collectible on display. Security Edges use ½ inch of the shelf depth. COLOR SAMPLES: If you place an order, you can request up to 3 color samples at no cost. Color samples ship via USPS Priority mail and we will send you the tracking number. If you attach a cell phone photo, we can assist you in selecting the color samples. AN INSPECTION PROCESS IS USED: Defects that are not acceptable include knots, cracks, worm holes, wind stress fractures and any discoloration in the oak that will cause uneven staining. As a shelf moves thru our woodshop, it is inspected several times to insure it meets the high quality standards that Old World Woodshop is known for. A PROFESSIONAL WOOD FINISH starts with the sanding. Our multi-step sanding process includes hand sanding the end grain until a smoothness is reached which allows the proper amount of stain color to be absorbed. Prior to entering the Finish Room, all sanding dust is removed and the shelf is inspected. Danish oil is used to stain and seal the oak. After the oil has dried, our shelves receive a built up lacquer finish which is "Hand Rubbed" after each coat is applied. EASY INSTALLATION: Shelves are mounted from the front side using the shelf as a marking template. The 65 pound shear rating of the drywall anchors we provide eliminates the need to locate or use the wall studs. Mounting screws, high strength drywall anchors, and mounting instructions are included. CUSTOMER SERVICE IS VERY IMPORTANT TO US: All orders are confirmed by message.
