Rhizophora mangle (Red Mangrove) is an erect, evergreen tree often forming impenetrable thickets on salt or brackish shores. It bears thick, elliptic, simple, and opposite leaves, 2-7 in. long (5-17 cm). The foliage is dark green above and paler green underneath with tiny black dots. Blooming year-round, with a peak in early to mid-summer, small, yellow-green, star-like flowers, with four leathery petals, appear in clusters of 2-3 on the leaf axils.
