Painted turtles are one of the most popular species of pet turtle not just in the United States, but around the world. Here's an easy method to identify them. Westerns: The bottom of their shell is very colorful and isn't solid. Southerns: The bottom of their shell is solid yellow except for a dark-colored line in the middle. Easterns: The scutes of their shell all line up vertically. Midlands: The scutes of their shell do not line up vertically and are instead staggered.
