Today I am going to teach you the basic steps to prepare your dahlia tubers for winter storage, so they are ready to plant next spring! Dahlias are one of my favorite flowers to grow. There is something about their magnificent sizes and colors that just make me happy every time I see them. Dahlias are easy to grow, come in a variety of colors, and if cared for correctly, you can dig, divide and replant the dahlia tubers year after year for more and more blooms. You can divide either in fall or spring… there is no right way, it often is just a matter of personal preference and how you want to store them. Dahlias stored over winter in clumps often do better, but they also take more room. If you divide in fall, you have to have your storage area more dialed in but you also can squeeze in a lot more. Whichever way you choose, I get a lot of questions on how to actually divide so here you go!

Important notes!

•Some people like to divide the clump in half before they start dividing. This isn’t my preference, but it’s a totally valid way to do it if it’s easier for you.
