งานประกาศผลรางวัลออสการ์ ครั้งที่ 1 จัดขึ้นเมื่อวันที่ 16 พฤษภาคม ปีค.ศ. 1929 ที่โรงแรม Hollywood Roosevelt บัตรเข้าชมราคา 5$ มีผู้ร่วมงานไม่ถึง 250 คน งานจัดแค่ 15 นาที ในครั้งนี้การประกาศผู้ที่ได้รับรางวัลไม่เหมือนครั้งหลังๆ โดยจะประกาศรายชื่อผู้ที่ได้รับรางวัลก่อนวันงานจริงหลายเดือน แล้วจึงมอบรางวัลในงานภายหลัง งานประกาศผลรางวัลออสการ์ครั้งนี้เป็นครั้งเดียวที่ไม่มีการถ่ายทอดสู่สาธารณชน

การมอบรางวัลในช่วงแรกๆนี้จะไม่เหมือนครั้งหลังๆ คือ จะดูที่หลายๆผลงานใน 1 ปีของบุคคลนั้นๆ เช่น Emil Jannings ได้รับรางวัลนักแสดงนำชายยอดเยี่ยมจากภาพยนตร์เรื่อง The Way of All Flesh และ The Last Command เป็นต้น
