ชาววิซิกอท

วิซิกอท (อังกฤษ: Visigoths, ละติน: Visigothi, Wisigothi, แปลว่า "กอทตะวันตก") เป็นหนึ่งในชาติพันธุ์สองสาขาหลักของชาวกอท ซึ่งเป็นชนเผ่าเจอร์มานิคตะวันออกกลุ่มหนึ่ง โดยอีกสาขาหนึ่งในกลุ่มนี้คือชาวออสโตรกอทหรือ "กอทตะวันออก" สันนิษฐานกันว่าชาวกอททั้งสองสาขานี้มีต้นกำเนิดอยู่แถบประเทศยูเครนในปัจจุบัน

ชาววิซิกอทเป็นหนึ่งในอนารยชนกลุ่มชนเจอร์มานิคต่าง ๆ ที่เข้ามารุกรานจักรวรรดิโรมันตอนปลายในสมัยการอพยพ เนื่องจากประชากรที่เพิ่มจำนวนขึ้น ความขาดแคลนอาหาร ประกอบกับการถูกกดดันจากอนารยชนชาวฮัน ที่มาจากเอเชียกลาง จนกระทั่งในปี ค.ศ. 410 กองทัพวิซิกอทที่นำโดยพระเจ้าอาลาริกที่ 1 ประสบความสำเร็จในการพิชิตกรุงโรม และหลังจากการล่มสลายของจักรวรรดิโรมันตะวันตกเป็นต้นมา ชาววิซิกอทก็มีบทบาทสำคัญในด้านต่าง ๆ ของภูมิภาคยุโรปตะวันตกอยู่เป็นเวลานานถึงสองศตวรรษครึ่ง
