I'd HEARD about Goodreads.com and I think, many moons ago, I had an account but I just set up another account today. And at first, I was all about adding some really meaningful books to my list, like A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin, Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer and The Perfect Storm by Sebastian Junger, the latter of which are truly two of my favorite books in the wide world.

But then (purely by accident. Well, maybe not PURELY) I happened upon the Bodice Rippers Anonymous group and since then, I've been clicking away, rediscovering all the wonderful (occasionally tacky, always guilty pleasure-y) historical romance novels that I was so devoted to back in the day. And as almost everyone who was a romance fan in their 20s, I still have an unfinished (handwritten!) historical romance tucked into the back of the shelves of my study.

I get a fiendish glee imagining the looks on my family's faces if I should kick the bucket and they discover the adventures of exquisitely beautiful young Moira, the Texas rancher's daughter and the studly Galveston ship's captain, Casey, who she is forced to marry when they are caught in a compromising position!

Let me tell you, friends. Her bodice was ripped mightily!

We got home from fantabulous Vancouver last night around midnight and this morning, I have a mountain of laundry and other chores to accomplish (not the least of which is one of those NY resolutions to get off my big, round ass and get back into shape).

Still feeling a tiny bit jet lagged (hey, I'm old, it goes with the territory) but with a houseful of Christmas decorations to deal with and said laundry mountain, I have but a minute to post. Vancouver is like no place else - there was rain, mist, drizzle and being drought-ridden Texans, we loved it all. We only ever use our umbrellas when we travel, it seems!

Hope everyone had an awesome holiday!

I have had an exceptionally great Christmas this year and I hope the rest of y'all do, too. Happy Holidays!

And no, that's not a euphemism. That's a effin fact. ; ))))))))))))

And Alex, Australian GQ Man of the year.

tex: (sga-McKay Sheppard)
I have loved the SGA fandom and McKay/Sheppard dearly and long, more so than any other show/pairing ever. So it is such a thrill to discover a brand-new (to me) AU series. It's called VARIATIONS by Kisahawklin. Highly recommend.
tex: (WTF?)
Just watched David Hewlett's epic, Rage of the Yeti.

Did they, like, film that in someone's garage?

When I said epic, I meant epic levels of BAD.

Give me some more Ferocious Planet.

No, not that one. (I always carry Immodium with me). No, I'm talking about a yes or no on taking a flu shot before our travels next month. I never take flu shots and I haven't had the flu, the real, full-on, fever over 102 kind of flu since I was in middle school.

That, dear people, is the most pressing decision I have to make today. And I'm taking off for the Metroplex to see my darling Louisiana girls. There will be food. There will be movies. There will be trash talking.

Have a good weekend, buddies.

PS. I'm not sure this actually qualifies as a post. More of an informative nuisance. Or a sober drunk post. Maybe I should go now. ; )

But you can probably figure out.

I can't stop thinking about HER

WITH HIM. And apparently, it's gonna happen in Metal Hurlant. Her name is Kelly Brook and she is a bikini model/actress from the UK. Geez Louise. Just kill me now.
tex: (Downton Abbey)
Because I've fallen for the wonderful Downton Abbey. It's so rich and powerful yet understated in the way that really good drama is. It's filmed beautifully, too. I just can't take my eyes away.

Of course, it points out something truly sad about the state of American entertainment. Hollywood gives us continual remakes and sequels and shit like Jersey Shore and The Real Housewives. The UK gives us Downton Abbey. Thank you, cousins.
tex: (H50-Kono)
...I wanted to make an observation about one of my favorite shows (last year) H50. I know it's only been two episodes of this new season, but thus far, I'm disappointed and growing more so as I hear what's planned for future episodes.

cut for possible spoilers )

Goodness. I can't believe I haven't updated here since May. I've been reading and keeping up with you all and commenting here and there, but somehow, no posting. I've been lucky enough to do a lot of traveling and my family has been experiencing many new changes, almost all for the good - new marriage, completion of school, new business. I'm glad to report that all is well (knock on wood)!

I just got back from yet another glorious trip to Nova Scotia and a wonderful visit with my darling [livejournal.com profile] lamardeuse. She and her J cart me around and let me stay at their house and feed me and get me wined up (Muscat. Yummy!) and make me feel like a part of the family. A Canadian family! Hopefully, in another couple of years, we're going to meet in Montreal, possibly with other fangirls, and do it French-Canadian style. Come on, you KNOW you want to go!

And oh, by the way - a great deal of pimping went on between the good food and the wine and the visits to lovely seaside villages. I saw that Jeeves show, I watched in amazement at all the gay in the Sherlock Holmes movie and The Eagle. But it was the Sherlock Holmes TV show and the guy with the unpronounceable name that really struck a chord with me. I want to
see more of that Holmes and Watson thing!

Hi, everybody! Hi!

Happy birthday to my very first friend in fandom and my very first LJ friend. Hope you have a wonderful day, Anne!

More stories from VanCon: )

More pictures to follow. Also, Daily Flanigan on Twitter is back in business. Friend if you like!
tex: (jf-Winged John)
I went to VanCon this past weekend and really, I swear, this time, I mean it when I say I'm done with cons. I never have any money anymore and I think I've pretty much accomplished all that I can (legally )at these conventions. I've taken pictures with Joe with his arm around me, with both his arms around me and for this very last time, I posed to look like I was about to give him a kiss on the cheek (his skin is amazingly clear for all the stubble). As for DavidH, he is hilarious and wonderful to stand next to for a photo op and as usual, David and Joe together on stage is a massive fangirl delight. I will miss them as Sheppard and McKay sooooo very much.

Here are a few pictures from Saturday. David looked fit and gorgeous and Joe was wearing this sorta pink, sorta orchid colored shirt and a puffy, impossibly soft black down jacket. *sigh* Really, pillowy soft.
Farewell to babes )

At the private meet and greet, we learned that Joe is planning to have surgery this week, depending on what he learns at his next doctor's visit. They were waiting for the swelling to go down before making the decision on a time. His mom has had the same surgery.

He got 16 stitches in his finger, unrelated to the accident that caused his shoulder injury. He and his friend were riding on some mountain bike trails and they were wearing these helmut cams (oh, boys) so they caught the whole thing on video.

His new project, Spore, isn't in production yet so his surgery won't effect/interrupt filming.

He had recently gotten a phone call from Jason, who is in Hawaii.

He hasn't seen Rachel lately and hasn't been to David's new house in Santa Monica yet. He was pretty busy with work and travel from August to December.

Upon returning from one of his travels, he found that his wife had adopted a fifth dog. His wife thinks the dog looks like Joe (it's a black dog with a brown muzzle and some of his hair sticks up on his head).

He said he was offered (the lead?) male role in the SyFy movie Red. But he turned it down because of the timing and location of the filming.

He watched Ferocious Planet with his boys and his three nephews and said the next couple of days, the boys played Ferocious Planet, with each boy saying, I'm Daddy. No, I'm Daddy, back and forth, pretending they were shooting monsters.

First of all, thanks to everyone who took my To Ribbon or Not Ribbon poll. I took your advice and went with the ribbon as a finisher on the favor boxes. And we only had about 8 or 10 left! I was afraid we'd be eating M&Ms for the next 6 months. Which we totally could, regardless. : )

The wedding and the reception went off without a hitch. No parking problems, no dress disasters, no huge buffet lines. I can't explain what it feels like to watch your male child dressed up in a tux and hold hands with someone and pledge to be together forever. I didn't cry, which kinda surprised me. I just had this massive smile of joy on my face that, I kid you not, didn't go away for three hours. It was right up there with giving birth to him -- I'll never forget it.

There were a couple of things, though.

1. I bought these shoes to wear with my dress and I was going to bring these flats in black to wear at the reception. But, I know they don't look like it but those heels were so damn high, I was walking very precariously and carefully, so much so that I decided I was going to look like an idiot hobbling down the path to our seats (the wedding was outside). I ended up wearing the flats, even though they weren't really appropriate for the ceremony or my dress. I was comfortable, though and didn't fall once!

2. The wedding cake was partially inedible. It was made of a creme brulee fondant and well, I didn't know this beforehand but fondant is like icing on steroids. It's thick and tough and tastes like flavored plastic. It was terrible. The cake itself was nice, moist and tasty but you literally had to "skin" the fondant off the cake before you could eat it. On the other hand, the groom's cake was chocolate buttercream and was reportedly delicious. I don't know - it went so fast, I didn't even get a piece.

So in conclusion, just say no to fondant and heels. Yes to buttercream and flats.

Today is my last day of shock-and-awe house cleaning. Tomorrow morning is my pedicure/manicure appt. (at 930am, but I probably won't be able to sleep late anyway) then the wedding rehearsal at 5pm followed by the rehearsal dinner at 630pm. *breathes deep*

So I need some opinions. These are the favor boxes for the wedding guests (they are filled with pink M&Ms with my son and his fiancee's name, the wedding date and two little hearts on them!) but I can't decide -- do the ribbons on the boxes add anything to the overall look? Do they look better plain? I'd appreciate any suggestions.

I'm going to get my highlights done today and also, I'm going to discuss what the devil to do with my hair for the wedding. I had been thinking putting it up but now, I don't know. I never put my hair up (unless its in a pony tail under a baseball cap because it looks like crap) or if I even want to bother going to the salon on the day of the wedding. I'm going to have enough to worry about that day without adding my hair to the mix. Advice, friends?
tex: (Default)
I couldn't decide whether I wanted to taint my opinion of Alex O'Loughlin's smoldering sexiness and intense bad-assness with a terrible Jennifer Lopez movie so instead, I bought the entire season of Moonlight.

2 Examples of Alex leaving his sexiness all over the place )

Umm. Yeah. That'll work better.
tex: (Default)
Remember those awesome shoes I bought for the wedding? Well, they don't go with the dress I picked out (and it would have made me inches taller than Mr. Rose so probably not a good idea anyway. What?? I like short guysscottcaan.)

But they'll be perfect to wear in LA to see [livejournal.com profile] wpadmirer's play! They are definitely Hollywood shoes!
