Giveaway: Forever Texas Tour

Thanks to Brianne Beers of Forever/ Hachette, I am giving away up to 3 sets of both books.

Description of Don't Mess With Texas by Christie Craig:

Nikki Hunt thought her night couldn't get worse when her no-good, cheating ex ditched her at dinner, sticking her with the bill. Then she found his body stuffed in the trunk of her car and lost her two-hundred-dollar meal all over his three-thousand-dollar suit. Now not only is Nikki nearly broke, she's a murder suspect.

Former cop turned PI, Dallas O'Connor knows what it's like to be unjustly accused. But one look at the sexy-though skittish-suspect tells him she couldn't hurt anyone. The lead detective, Dallas's own brother, has the wrong woman and Dallas hopes a little late-night "undercover" work will help him prove it . . .

Description of Heartstrings and Diamond Rings by Jane Graves:

HE'S THE MAN OF HER DREAMS . . .

In a world full of frogs, Alison Carter is determined to find her prince. Maybe her dating past is more Titanic than Love Boat, but she's seen enough happy marriages to know that true love is possible. No matter what, she won't give up on happily-ever-after. If she can't find Mr. Right, she'll simply hire someone who can.

SHE JUST DOESN'T KNOW IT YET

When Brandon Scott inherits a successful matchmaking business, he thinks his prayers have been answered. Set up a few lonely ladies, collect the fee, how hard can it be? No one needs to know he's not really a professional matchmaker-especially not his first client, the beautiful, spirited Alison. Soon he's falling for her-and her dreams of kids and carpools. But Alison is getting close to figuring out his secret, and if she learns he's deceived her too, she'll walk right out the door, taking Brandon's heart with her.

The Beauty of Humanity Movement by Camilla Gibb

Set in contemporary Vietnam with flashbacks to 1960's/70's communism, Old Man Hung is said to make the best pho (a beef noodle soup)in the city of Hanoi.  However, you have to find him first!  He has to move his cart to different places around the city to keep the police off his tail.  He use to have a space that he rented by between the rent increases and the bribes he had to give the cops, he couldn't afford it anymore.  He has loyal customers and word spreads like wildfire to the exact location of his cart from day to day.

Old Man Hung is like a father to Binh, who lost his father Dao to a communist work camp.  Old Man Hung is like a grandfather to Bihn's son, Tu.  Tu is a tour guide.

One day Maggie a Vietnamese woman who grew up in America, shows up at the Pho cart.  She asks Old Man Hung to try to remember everything he can about her father, Ly Van Hai, to help her locate him.  He was an artist during the Ho Chi Minh regime.  Maggie also works for an art museum in Hanoi and hires Tu to take her around on business.

Art, family, relationships, Pho, and communist regimes are all included in The Beauty of Humanity Movement.  It is a beautifully written story with well developed and memorable characters.

I especially love Old Man Hung.  He is a witty, kind, and intelligent man with great knowledge of human nature.  He is who Bihn and his son, Tu turn to and watch out for.  The Beauty of Humanity Movement is a delight and I didn't want it to end.  This book is a must read for those who love literary fiction with a splash of foreign history.

Love At Absolute Zero by Christopher Meeks

At 32 years old, Gunnar just earned tenure as a physicist at the University of Wisconsin.  He takes this as a sign that it is time for him to find a wife.  He has a three day break from work and decides that he must find a wife in that time however, he understands very little about love and relationships.  He enlists the help of his two friends/ colleagues to find a scientific method of finding his soul mate.

This new method meets with hilarious results, while all the time the reader can't help but root for Gunnar.  In three days time he gets Lasik eye surgery on his eyes, braces, and a new hair style, all to appear more attractive to women.  He goes to two speed dating events.  The first one with disastrous consequences.
Gunnar finds love on the third night but Kara is from Denmark.  Should he risk his tenure to follow ?  He has never been outside of Wisconsin, let alone outside of North America.  He could go there and work as a visiting professor at the Niels Bohr Institute.

I must admit I was a little nervous accepting a review copy of this book.  I loved Christopher Meeks first novel, The Brightest Moon of the Century however, science scares me.  I also don`t always enjoy romance.  I usually like historical fiction or literary fiction that has an element of romance but not as the main plot.

I need not have worried! Christopher Meeks pulled it off  beautifully.  He was able to explain the science, so that even I could understand it and actually enjoy it.  This is true literary fiction.  It has romance but so much more!  Meeks has a biting sense of humor and has created quirky yet totally believable characters.  This book is a must read for literary fiction lovers.

4.5/5

Mailbox Monday

Mailbox Monday now has it's very own blog, Mailbox Monday.  It is also on tour and is being hosted by  Amused by Books in September.

Here are the books I received last week:

Another unsolicited book from St. Martin's Press.  It actually sounds quite good to me however, it is like 13th in a series that I haven't read.  Does anyone know if it can be read as a stand alone book?
This is another unsolicited book that sound good to me.  I will be hosting a giveaway of it soon, so stay tuned.

I wanted to get this book at the BEA back in May but had trouble getting there early enough to get it.  My feet were killing me and I was so tired, I had to sleep in a bit.  The old saying is true, "you snooze, you loose."  Thanks to Liz Leong of Doubleday.  Stay tuned, I will be hosting a giveaway of this book.
This is another book I missed getting at the BEA in May.  Thanks to Net Galley, I now have the ebook.

The Doll by Daphne du Maurier

The Doll is a short story written by Daphne du Maurier that was lost for over 70 years.  According to The Guardian, it was first published in 1937 and hadn't been published again until recently.

Dr. E. Strongman finds a mysterious diary washed up on the shore.  The author of it is unknown and some of it is illegible and has some pages missing.  However, Dr. Strongman writes a paper on it.

It is most certainly written by a man obsessed with a woman named, Rebecca.  We learn that she is a violinist and met the unknown man at a party.  He later starts coming to her flat.
"Before I left she showed me round her tiny flat. There was a little scullery place she used for a kitchen, a poky bathroom, and her own small bedroom which was furnished like a nun's cell, quite plain and bare. There was another room leading from the studio, but she did not show me this."
Rebecca does eventually show him the other room, to introduce him to Julio.  He turns out to be a very evil looking mechanical doll.  The he persistently asks Rebecca why she has this doll, she never tells him.  He becomes more and more obsessed with her and the doll.
This is a pretty creepy story about obsession.  Very well written and great character development.  I highly recommend it, especially for those who can't get enough of Daphne du Mauier.  Click on The Guardian to read it.

Giveaway and Review: Help for Writers by Roy Peter Clark

The subtitle of this book is 210 Solutions to the Problem Every Writer faces.  I decided to accept a review copy of this book to see if there were any tips that a book blogger could use in writing reviews.

Though there wasn't a specific chapter dedicated to writing book reviews, there were a lot of useful tips.  The book is divided in to seven steps of the writing process.  The most useful step for me was step four: Looking for Language.  If I am searching for a word to use, the first place I usually go to is a thesaurus or dictionary.  However, there are so many other great places to find words.  For instance, one I know some of you book bloggers already do is to keep a list of new words you come across in your reading.  There is even a meme going around for that.

I often catch myself writing in cliche' and wonder if it is really appropriate Clark says it's okay to have some.  He does suggest "When tempted by a cliche', give yourself one minute to think of an alternative."  To help with this write it down and then write down alternative words and phrases.

This book is full of ideas for writers.  If you are a writer you may very well find this book helpful.

About Roy Peter Clark:

Roy Peter Clark, a Ph.D. in medieval literature, is Vice President and Senior Scholar of the world-renowned Poynter Institute. The author or editor of 14 professional books, he is founding director of the National Writer's Workshops, regional conferences that attract 5,000 writers annually. His 50 tools, published in abbreviated form on the Poynter Website (www.poynter.org), have already gained foothold worldwide.
