Search your browsing history in Chrome with AI

You can use everyday language to find what you’re searching for in your Chrome browsing history without knowing an exact keyword or website address.

Important:

  • To use this feature, make sure that you’re located in the US and use Chrome in English. Learn how to change Chrome languages and translate webpages.
  • When you turn on "History search, powered by AI," in addition to the page title and URL, the page contents of the website you browse are stored locally.
  • After you turn on this feature, websites that you visit appear in AI-powered history search results.
  • You can turn off "History search, powered by AI" any time in the Settings.
  1. On your computer, open Chrome.
  2. At the top right, select More More and then Settings.
  3. Select You and Google and then Sync and Google services.
  4. Under “Other Google services,” select History search, powered by AI.
  5. Turn History search, powered by AI on or off.

Find your best match browsing history

  1. On your computer, open Chrome.
  2. At the top right, select More More and then History and then History.
  3. Enter your search.
    • To receive AI-powered results, make your search text or question as precise and detailed as possible. Use 2 or more words to describe what you’re searching for.
    • Filter by specific time periods:
      • Yesterday
      • Last 7 days
      • Last 30 days
    • The result displays 1-3 best matches.

Tips:

  • When you search short and simple text, you’ll be matched directly to the page title or URL. You won’t find an AI-powered result.
  • You can rate the best match result. At the bottom of the best match result, select Thumbs up or Thumbs down .
    • If you select Thumbs down , you can provide additional feedback on why the result didn’t meet your needs.
  • You can also search for browsing history in the address bar. Learn how to find a page from your history.

How your data is used for History search, powered by AI

When you use History search, powered by AI, your searches, best matches, and their page contents are sent to Google. As described in our Google Privacy Policy, this information is used to improve this feature, which includes generative model research and machine learning technologies. For example, Google uses the data it collects to:

  • Increase the effectiveness of safety policies.
  • Address the challenges that come with large language models.

To improve History search, powered by AI, Google may have humans review the data to help us understand the types of problems that occur.

As you browse websites, their page contents are saved and encrypted to your device and might affect Chrome’s performance.
