I finally got it working.

I just downloaded source, phpized it and installed it as module to php.
Now it is persistent. No use of Tomcat...

Please do. This problem comes up from time to time.
IMHO it is a mistake to return an empty page instead
of a clear error message. In Java for example you'll
always get a clear error message and a stack trace,
not just an empty file.

Almost all PHP packages contain a php-cgi.exe which
differs from the cli variant php.exe.

This isn't (or shouldn't be) different on Linux or
Unix machines. If some Linux package installs the PHP
cgi exe as "php" instead of "php-cgi", please file a
bug report.

I didn't want to file a bug. I just wanted help and posted my experience so someone would be able to help me. Sorry.

Perhaps to you. 
Is my assumption right, that I have to install additionally to already available PHP 5.1.2 another PHP-CGI-Version and refer to the executable in the web.xml? Or can I just refer to the executable of the PHP 5.1.2?

mistake. You should be able to see the PHP error
message in the error log. Presumably URL access is
disabled in your php.ini.

In any case, this isn't a PHP/Java Bridge problem.
Please report PHP problems to the PHP bug tracker, not
to us.

Okay, I installed and started Tomcat, deployed JavaBridge.war onto it.

I have Apache 2.2 and PHP 5.1.2 installed on Suse Linux.

When I go to localhost/test.php, which contains only

I get a blank page back.

When I go to localhost:8080/JavaBridge I get the following error message:

So you have started the built-in servlet engine.

Because we don't provide scripts which could start the
built-in servlet engine as a service. Please use a
real servlet engine or J2EE server instead. This will
be much faster, too. Our simple servlet engine only
supports HTTP 1.0, which means that PHP cannot use
persistent connections.

Please be more specific, as I cannot understand what you mean :-)

Hi,

I have Suse Linux 10.1 installed, I can start the JavaBridge by calling "java -jar javabridge.jar SERVLET_LOCAL:8080" on console. 

I now want to persist the JavaBridge. This means: starting automatically on startup of the machine.

How can I do this?

I already tried to write an init.d-script with the console command mentioned above, but that didn't work out.

Could anyone give me some hints on this topic?

That was the key I needed Jost!
Thank you so much.

Now the config files are being loaded by the API from the java.ext.dirs

I also successfuly compiled and installed PHP/Java Bridge on Solaris and
it's doing very well through the final development stages before going to
testing and production.

is it possible to split ít into two packages, one
containing the java.so and the other one the back end
(presumably "JavaBridge.war")?

What about requiring a tomcat servlet engine as a
default back end on all operating systems? Those who
don't or can't use a java.so may use the pure PHP
implementation by "require()"ing the Java.inc built
into the back end.

The others can install an additional debian package
providing the java.so and a java.ini file. The pure
PHP implementation has been programmed so that it
automatically uses the java.so, if available.

Do you have any numbers? Even if the pure PHP
implementation is 5 times slower than the C
implementation on some operating systems (which I
believe isn't the case), other technologies are even
more expensive.

Isn't it possible to optmize the particular code block
so that the bridge can send an XML image to the back
end and/or to receive the result in one call?

The main problem with compiling a windows dll is that
it needs a proprietary tool. The pecl4win people have
the necessary infrastructure.

After 4.0.8 is released in June, we can think about
changing the license of the C implementation back to
PHP3 and donate the C code to the pecl maintainers (if
they want it).

Check the Apache error_log to see if you got any exception or error loading
the jar.

I've got a problem using the bridge. This little example presents it. The 
php file calls a method (QRCodeVerif) which creates a QRCodeDecoder from the 
qrcode.jar. This creation fails although the .jar is in the CLASSPATH 
(compilation is ok).

I just uploaded to the sf.net project files area the new 4.0.6 Debian package, compiled in a pure Debian GNU / Linux 4.0 Etch.
You will also find the needed package source files for package rebuilding at your machine (read the release notes), including the source orig.tar.gz file for compiling at other platforms too.
Please, test them.

I tried placing my config files on:
/usr/java/packages/lib/ext
/usr/share/java-ext/
/usr/share/pear
and in the same location as the php file that loads the class.

I can't get it to work.

The API I'm trying to implement loads these configuration files using
ClassLoader.getSystemResource and I need to figure out some way to load
them.

Thanks again for your helpful advice. Apart from this I'm making big
progress with PHP/Java Brigde and it is being very useful.

Hi everyone,

I'm a php-java-bridge user, in windows environment and the performance 
penalty is very relevant for our needs and so, i've alocated some time 
(without priority mind) to build the module into a windows dll.

I'm trying (time allow) to "understand" the windows build requirements 
(not an easy task with all the obscure "Zend" stuff around) for it and 
build an Ant/Nant file to build it easier.

I've had some success in some of the building steps, but it is still a 
work very much in the process.

I know it won't be much, but this is the help i can provide...

I think you're right, it seems foolish to require an
explicit conversion from java.lang.String to string.

Please add the following code to the
php.java.bridge.JavaBridge.java:

public String ObjectToString(String ob) {
  return (String)castToString(ob);
}
 
After that all java.lang.String objects are displayed
as a string value, even though they are still string
objects:

$s = new Java("java.lang.String", "hello world");
echo $s;
echo "\n";
echo $s->substring(0,5);

=> hello world
=> hello

I have uploaded 4.0.3 for testing, it already contains
this code.

object->value casts do not work on PHP level. That's a
shortcoming in the php engine, imho.

I don't know where the first, incorrect path comes
from . The no-debug-non-zts-20050922 directory is the
correct one.

No. php does this automatically. You seem to have two
different PHP versions installed. One is patched and
uses lib/extension. The other one is the version from
which the development files came from. Just remove
either one and it will work.

I think this is a general misunderstanding how the
environment works. Each process has its own
environment. If you use putenv, this will not affect
the oracle server nor any other process which has not
been started from this particular php instance. Since
the php instance terminates after each request (which
means that you must not start processes from php
instances anyway), the putenv procedure is pretty
useless (at least in a web environment).

No. If you want to start Java as a sub process of
Apache, and you want to pass your own options to this
sub process, you need to write a wrapper binary which
exec's java with the parameters you need. Please see
the RunJavaBridge wrapper (in the server folder of the
source download) for details.

Why don't you simply start Java via a system service,
for example via tomcat?

Ok... it took me a while but I finally got it working. It was one of those
time when you try hundreds of different things and by the end you don't kno=
w
if what you're trying you have already done it or not.
The thing is that my php.ini was loading the extensions from extension_dir =
=3D
"/usr/local/php/lib/extensions/" and the java.so was installed on
/usr/local/php/lib/extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20050922/
What I don't know is why it didn't work when I copied every file from
usr/local/php/lib/extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20050922/ to
/usr/local/php/lib/extensions/
Is there any way to change that installation path while configuring PHP/Jav=

Not even using putenv PHP function? Because I use that to configure some
Oracle stuff.

I would rather work something out that did not envolve having to modify
startup configuration.
I'm using this to work with a java api, which would be a quite small part o=

Might be. I read something  like that, the problem is that  the
getSystemResource call is made from  the API I'm working with (which source
I don't have), and I have to work with that.
