Certanly. But RHEL3 shipped with PHP4 only.

The RHEL3 RPM contains binaries for PHP4, the Fedora
Core 4 (or RHEL4) RPM contains binaries for PHP5, the
Fedora Core 5 (or RHEL5) RPM contains binaries for
PHP5.1 or PHP6.

That doesn't necessarily mean that you must upgrade to
RHEL4 if you want to use PHP5, of course. Just install
the appropriate PHP5 and FC4 RPM's. -- You may need to
re-compile the php5-*.src.rpm and
php-java-bridge-*.src.rpm and other files against your
system, though.

When we try to install the PHP-JAVA bridge 3.0.8-1, we get the following

tested with tomcat 5.5 on FreeBSD 6.

However, Java on FreeBSD runs quite slow, so I don't
think many people will use it. Therefore I will not
make FreeBSD binaries available in future releases.

For Linux, Solaris and Windows the CGI directory
contains php-cgi-<os>-<arch> executables, but not for
FreeBSD. -- I have a freebsd FastCGI binary here, but
I decided to not include it until we get a support
request[1].

So what happend is that the FastCGI servlet has
started /usr/bin/php in the asumtion that this is a
(Fast-)CGI binary, which isn't the case on FreeBSD.
FreeBSD only ships with a command line binary. The PHP
cli binary is similar to the cgi binary but doesn't
read HTTP information like X_JAVABRIDGE_CONTEXT=, so
the communication channel doesn't work.

To fix this problem please install a php-cgi binary
into /usr/bin/ or please start a standalone PHP
FastCGI server with the command:

./php-cgi -b:9667

(Please see the section PHP without Apache/IIS
front-end in the README for details).

I don't think one exists. Until recently it wasn't
legally (and technically[1]) possible to ship a
pre-compiled java binary for FreeBSD. Now that this is
possible I will add a php-cgi-x86-freebsd FastCGI
binary to the JavaBridge.war. I will inform you when
it's available.

I've been struggling for a couple of weeks to make this work.  In =
particular
I want to use the bridge with tomcat 5.5.  If I browse to
http://localhost:8080/JavaBridge nothing happens.  http://localhost:8080
<http://localhost:8080/>  does bring up the tomcat default page OK.  =
Running
http://localhost/test.php from the JavaBridge directory was working at =
one
time.  It still displays phpinfo OK but now at the bottom where I was
getting a lot of java info I'm getting this instead:

[I assume you mean "Exception"]

-1 is an invalid TCP and LOCAL address. Most likely
the -1 comes from the java.socketname from your
php.ini or /etc/php.d/java*.ini.

What does phpinfo() show and how have you started the
java back-end (if any)?

Another possibility is that jdk1.4.2 has tried to use
IP6 instead of IP4 to connect to the local interface
or that the SEL restrictions denied socket
bind/connect.

If that's the case please check your SEL and/or IP
configuration. Or use LOCAL ("unix domain") sockets
instead, they are faster than IP sockets anyway:

java -jar JavaBridge.jar LOCAL:pjb 4 ""

and the php.ini entry:

java.socketname=pjb

Unlike TCP, LOCAL sockets are allowed by the SEL
policy (assuming that you've correctly installed the
SEL policy files).

I reinstalled the entire stack and made sure both the front and back
ends were running 3.0.8.  I can no longer reproduce them problem.  You
are likely correct that it was a version mismatch.  I suspect I had some
leftover configuration that was directing traffic to the wrong servlet
path (with an older backend)

correction: the segfault only happens if both ZTS and
debug are enabled. It is possible to use 5.1.2 with
the Apache2 Worker MPM or NT MPM, if debug is off.
(When the Worker MPM is used, the Apache+PHP+PHP/Java
Bridge+standalone java backend combination delivers
java-based content more than twice as fast compared
with Apache Tomcat.

Thanks. The problem is an assertion failure because
the back-end has sent an <Object ...> request without
a predicate, the predicate is required since 3.0.8.
More about this on the ticket. -- Although I've
promised that a 3.0.8 back-end will work with an old
2.0.8 front-end, I forgot to implement the
compatibility option. Now that 3.0.8 is available it's
too late.

If anyone wants to use a 2.0.8 java.so or php_java.dll
with a 3.0.8 back-end, please open a separate support
request.

Hi,

I've just checked the code. Since version 3.0.8 the
problem you've described should not appear anymore: On
windows the PhpJavaServlet always passes null as the
ChannelName which causes the ContextServer to allocate
a SocketContextServer instead of a PipeContextServer.

So I suspect that you use an older version of the
back-end, probably the current cvs head, which is
3.0.8pre. Can you please check the log of your
application server? It should contain a line:

PhpJavaServlet Version 3.0.8   ready

Since 3.0.8 the version # of the back-end is also
stored in the global.properties within the
JavaBridge.jar (located in the JavaBridge.war). The
entry should be BACKEND_VERSION=3.0.8

Just instantiate and pass a java.lang.Vector() or a
List, for example.

Since java doesn't support first-class generics, you
can ignore them. The <...> is only syntactic shugar
for the compiler (and for the marketing).

The situation becomes different when Mono 2.0 appears,
which supports first-class generics. I will add a
section how to work with Mono generics when Mono 2.0
is available.

This is on XP.

I literally took the .war out of the distro and deployed it unmodified.
 Then I browsed over to http://localhost:8080/JavaBridge/test.php

Is there anything else I can do to help get to the root of this?

The php 5.1.2 on windows segfaults, yes (if I remember
correctly it's the leak detector). That problem has
been fixed in 5.1.3, which you can find in the
JavaBridge.war. On Windows please use the latest
stable PHP5 version, which is 5.0.5. Or please upgrade
to PHP5.1.3, when it becomes available. -- The memory
leak which caused the detector to crash is still in
php 5.1.3, but it isn't fatal anymore.[1]

On Linux the segfault shouldn't happen, unless you
have compiled PHP with ZTS. I have tested against the
PHP 5.1.2 binary that ships with RedHat FedoraCore 5,
which doesn't show the problem.

To reproduce the problem on Linux please stop your
apache http server and start it as follows:

strace -s1024 /usr/sbin/httpd -X 2>httpd.log

and re-run the test.

Sounds as if the PipeContextServer failed because the
front-end (the java.so) has sent garbage. The failure
doesn't affect the operation of the bridge because the
SocketContextServer takes over, if the
PipeContextServer fails.

I suspect the problem is in the java.so, probably the
mknod failed or has different semantics compared to
Solaris or Linux. Which operating system do you use? 

Can you please open a ticked and append the following
information:

Please start the standalone PHP server with the
command:

export X_JAVABRIDGE_OVERRIDE_HOSTS=/ 
cd to the JavaBridge/WEB-INF/cgi directory
strace ./php-cgi-ARCH-OS -b:9667 2>error.log

(Please see the README for details how to start a
standalone PHP FastCGI server)

On BSD or Solaris please use truss instead of strace.

Then please re-start your application server and
re-run the test.

Please append the above error.log at the end of the
ticket (please use

The bridge (v 3.0.8) segfaults when used as a module to php 5.1.2.  I
get this behavior reproducibly on both windows and linux (RH ES 4).  The
linux install was from source (phpize; configure
--with-java=/usr/java/jdk; make; make install).  The windows install
used java-x86-windows.dll renamed to php_java.dll.  Has anyone gotten
this combination to work?

I have deployed the 3.0.8 JavaBridge.war on JBoss 4.0.3SP1.  I then run
some of the samples, like test.php.  I find that any time I access a php
resource I get a FileNotFoundException in the log, although everything
seems to work fine.  (See trace below) I notice that an empty null.i
file appears in my JBoss bin directory. Does anyone have an idea as to
why this would happen?

php_java.dll is there but doesn't export the
java_get_server_name() function.

Which operating system do you use?

The test.php checks for java_get_server_name() to make
sure that our php_java.dll is used. For windows there
are several outdated php_java.dll files floating
around (see http://pecl4win.php.net/list.php/5_1).
They are unmaintained and don't work anymore since php
>=5.0.

I think the easiest way to test this is to install the
web application, which contains all needed components:


* Click on:
http://apache.dns4.com/tomcat/tomcat-5/v5.5.16/bin/apache-tomcat-5.5.16.exe

* Download the J2EE binary and copy JavaBridge.war to
the tomcat webapps directory

* Wait 15 seconds and visit
http://localhost:8080/JavaBridge

After that please compare the file size of your
php_java.dll and the java-x86-windows.dll from the
webapps\JavaBridge\WEB-INF\cgi folder.

I think it should be sufficient to copy the
java-x86-windows.dll (or the php5java-x86-windows.dll,
if you use php 5.0.x) and the JavaBridge.jar from the
webapps\JavaBridge\WEB-INF to your extension_dir and
to change your php.ini file from

  extension=php_java.dll

to 

  extension=java-x86-windows.dll

first of all thank you very much for this bug report.
I have created a ticket for this, please see PR1464354

Dynamic class loading and especially error reporting
is something that will improve in 3.1.x. -- My plan is
to add a set of standard PHP bindings (generated
during configure) which hide the Java(...) calls
internally. Together with the improved error reporing
this should help users to resolve such problems within
their eclipse IDE.

I don't know what causes this problem, but I know that
older versions of gcj "GNU Java" throw a null pointer
exception while resolving some urls. The NP is then
wrapped by a NoClassDefFoundError which in turn is
wrapped by a ClassNotFoundException. Or it might be
that gcj could not read some meta-information (text,
property files) after it has compiled the .jar files
to native code.

We'll check this, please see the PR1464354 for
details.

You could set the log level to 5 or a higher log level
and check the "trying to load ..." messages.
Unfortunately some older versions of gcj do not print
a stack trace unless c++filt is in the PATH, so you
might need to use strace to see the original error
message from the kernel.

So if anyone has this problem, I solved it.  Gcj was causing problems =
with
ClassNotFound and no matter what I did, nothing would solve the missing
libraries/classpath issue.  After switching to Sun's JDK/SDK package and
tinkering around with a few tweaks in php.ini, it works as expected. =20

Make sure your test.php is showing everything (including backend) as =
running
properly.

I'm not familier with the virtual hosts settings and
aliases, but as I understood it, one must add a
<Directory> entry for the DocumentRoot. I have tested
this with 3.0.8rc3:

/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf as follows:
