Hi Robert,

If your app is wxPython based then I would use the attached as a test 
case and not the simple_plot one.

Then if you don't use wxPython Unicode 2.6.x then you need to follow 
Andrea's work around.

matplotlib/backends/_wxagg.pyd

to

matplotlib/backends/_wxagg not used.pyd

python 2.4.3 (enthought edition) 
wx.VERSION_STRING = 2.6.3.3 
 
 
I tried your small example to use your setup and your simple_plot but i  
get the following traceback:
