Thanks for the report.  Yes, the dependencies should be made more 
explicit in the docs.

There doesn't really exist a convenient way to do that, and besides the 
vast majority of tests are image comparison tests.  The when the Python 
3.x branch of matplotlib (which is designed to work with Python 2.6 
forward) is merged into master, this will all be moot anyways.  Since 
PIL doesn't yet exist on Python 3.x, the image comparison routines had 
to be rewritten without using PIL.
