Thanks for the suggestion Jeff.  I have been dealing with the same problem.
I found the makefile in
/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/Current/lib/PythonX.Y/config/Makefile
from an EPD install.  Is this makefile the template used whenever I build a
package against python using distutils?  Or do I need to rebuild python
somehow for i386 only?

Hi all,

I would like to propose the attached patch to be able to use a gamma
value for color maps. This will make it simple to make your color
scale more 'sensitive' at the bottom or at the top, as can be seen in
the attached example. This could in principle also be solved by adding
a gamma normalizer, but I think that applying it to a color map is
quite coming practice, so in this case the preferred way.

I'd also like to add a few extra color maps (at least one plain
blue-white-red and one with darker shades at the high and low ends, as
in the attachment). I also remember a particular one ('terrain') in a
measurement program called 'Igor' that would be nice.

Looking at _cm.py, I would guess that could be done a bit more
efficient than the current 5880 lines as well by just specifying a few
colors and using LinearSegmentedColormap.from_list(). Is it ok if I
try to refactor that?

I am new to trying to build matplotlib from svn and believe I am up against
the issue described in this thread. That is, building matplotlib on Python
2.6.2/Windows, compiling/linking with MinGW seem to go fine but upon trying
to   

     from pylab import * 

 I get

     ....
     ....(lots of traceback that culminates below)
     ....
     C:\Python262\lib\site-packages\matplotlib\image.py in <module>()

which suggests using Visual Studio 2008 (VS9) instead of MinGW, but that was
for 0.98.5.3.  I installed VS9 and followed the instructions in that thread
but now when I try to import pylab Visual Studio's Just-In-Time Debugger
pops up telling me I have an unhandled win32 exception in python.exe

Can anyone comment on a verified way of building the latest matplotlib on
Windows/Python 2.6.2? I keep going down dead ends and would like to figure
out if its me or if I have just been down now-known bad paths.

Mike:  You need to edit

/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/Current/lib/PythonX.Y/Makefile

(or whatever the corresponding path is for your python installation)

and remove all references to "-arch ppc" if you don't want to build 
universal binaries (which you can't if the libs you're linking are not 
universal).

getting an error about a shared library being the wrong architecture.   
The confusing thing is that the call to g++ has two settings for arch:

"g++ -arch i386 -arch ppc..."

The error I get is:
"ld: in /Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.4u.sdk/Library/Frameworks/ 
Python.framework/Versions/4.3.0/lib/libz.1.dylib, file is not of  
required architecture for architecture ppc"

Is there some way to turn off the "-arch ppc" option to g++ in  
setup.py?  Or do I have some other problem?

Hi - scratch that. Only *seems* to be working. Actually it hangs when I run
scripts that open figures. I am going to undo all this and forget I ever

I tried following Robert Kern's suggestion and edited
/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/Current/lib/python2.5/config/Makefile
in order to remove the '-arch ppc' flag from the CFLAGS and LDFLAGS
variables, and from one other place in that file, but that didn't seem to
help. Even though now g++ is called without the possibly offending '-arch
ppc' flag, somethow that flag is generated later on in the call (after
'-undefined  dynamic_lookup') and I still get the same error:

Hi everyone,

This is my first posting on matplotlib-devel.  I have only picked up python
and MPL a year ago for some bioinformatics stuff and I love it.  I have
never been involved in contributing to an open-source project but I would
love to help.  I have only basic understanding of tools like svn etc, and I
have never coded in a collaborative environment.  Let me know the best way
for me to help.

Here is my problem:

I am trying to create a scatter plot with log axes (where all the values are
<1), but I also want to plot points that are zero-valued.  I tried to use
the symlog scale with a linthreshold of 1e-5 or so, but it wasn't working as
expected.  I looked into the code and it appears that the implementation for
SymmetricalLogTransform is designed only to handle linthresh parameters
>=1.  The transform does funny things if the threshold is smaller.

It's not obvious to me how to implement a scale that can handle positive and
negative values for a threshold < 1 (which is maybe why it is implemented
currently as it is).  Would it make most sense for me to try to modify the
symlog scale to handle this case?  Or write a completely new scale
specifically for this purpose, which I can contribute separately?

Also, how would I actually make the contribution?  If I were to modify the
current SymmetricalLogTransform, would I provide a diff output from the
current SVN version?  Or commit it myself?  And what about if I were to
write a new scale?

Hi John,
Now I remember why I never figured out how to contribute. I don't have a
Visual Studio 2003 compiler (only 2008 is available from microsoft any more)
and I don't have time to figure out all the flags and so on to compile. I do
have Mingw32 but no jumbling of ["python.exe", "setup.py", "install", "-c",
"mingw32"] will start it compiling, with and without quotes.

Anyway, I tried different things to get a diff file with the current source
for about an hour but I really need to get back to my data crunching now.

I would like to contribute but only on the interface/python front. Is it
possible to svn checkout just the *.py files or a way around needing to
compile the binaries?

an example, it is unlikely that the code would go so long w/o being
exercised.  We do supply some eeg data with mpl -- see
examples/pylab_examples/mri_with_eeg.py, so Ariel may want to write a
simple cohere_pairs examples which just generates a scatter plot or
something else to show the output and then we can include it in
backend driver do it is will be unlikely to suffer bit rot going

You may want to watch out for the fact that the docstring in your
version doesn't start with

  u"""

This means the string is Unicode.  It seems mpl has been unicode-ified
so it's best to fix this before you generate the diff.  This is why
John encourages the diff to be made against HEAD, so these little
things can be easily spotted.  By doing this, you'll notice small
changes in formatting you might not have meant to introduce, so it
lets you clean up the contribution before sending it so it really only
changes what you intended to.

I googled "wget" - downloaded wget source-code, installed wget.

No worries -- OSX is a nightmare.  First try this:

  make build_osx105

and if that works, you can

  python setup.py install

If that doesn't work, try

  cd release/osx
  # read the readme, then
  make fetch_deps dependencies
  # install bdist_wininst as instructed
  make installers

the latter sequence is what I do when building the installers, and
will grab all the dependencies, build them from src with the right
flags,  and use them instead of the system wide installed ones.

There is no reason for you to go through this for a simple pure python
patch, but I am interested in figuring out a way for regular OSX users
to be able to build mpl, so am happy to use you as a crash test dummy
:-)

Thanks Ariel for the patch.  Could you explain your patch in words --
what was broken before and how you fixed it.  Also, while your patch
is particularly simple, since it is just a single function
replacement, we encourage people to submit svn diffs against HEAD or
the branch they are patching.  It just makes life simpler for us,
since we (fortunately) get a lot of contributions.  I strongly
encourage people to include a complete, free-standing example that I
can run unmodified  which shows the undesired behavior pre-patch and
the desired behavior post-patch, with a clear verbal of what to look
for.  I wrote this function 5 years ago, and while I remember it
pretty well, I will not be as familiar with it after such a long
hiatus as you are now.

For those of us scoring at home, you may want to post an svn diff
against HEAD with which we can patch our distros, and an example file
or two or a very clear sequence of commands to illustrate the new
functionality before and after.  The ginput work is the product of one
or two developers out of a dozen, the rest of us have only limited
experience with it and less knowledge of the internals, so clear
"instructions for dummies" and easy installations via proper svn diffs
will help us experiment with your work.

Sorry for spamming, but I have another addition to
BlockingMouseInput.add_click, that fixes the problem of the graphics jumping
around while ginputting. This makes it much easier to zoom in on an imshow()
plot and click a bunch of points, for example (it used to zoom all the way
out!):

The new ginput is great, and I'm going to start using it instead of my
original implementation. The one problem is on my (and many) laptops, it is
in practice hard to middle click, and I often find myself accidentally
clicking or removing a click.

It would be nice (and should be straightforward) if there was a command-line
argument or two to switch the roles of the mouse buttons, so we could type
something like

ginput(0,0, add=1, remove=3, finish=2)

to swap the roles of the right and middle mouse buttons.

I just followed the procedure below to merge a patch I did on mplot3d
(R7446 on v099). However, a lot more stuff got merged and sent as I
did this (R7447). I hope I did not break anything!

We have some people in the Sage project who know Solaris very well and
are actively porting Sage and the projects Sage contains to Solaris.  I

I can try and take a look at this tomorrow.  I do have a solaris box
at work to test on, but we are on an older version of gcc.  Ideally,
we could find a c preprocessor macro to indicate the platform rather
than do an uname conditioned patch.  If anyone knows of a platform
macro for solaris to check for, let me know.
