according to the link, C++ applications using libstdc++ are not required = to be gpl either: The Code: Runtime GPL The source code of libstdc++-v3 is distributed under version 2 of the = GNU General Public License, with the so-called "runtime exception," as = follows (or see any header or implementation file): As a special exception, you may use this file as part of a free = software library without restriction. Specifically, if other files = instantiate templates or use macros or inline functions from this file, or you = compile this file and link it with other files to produce an executable, this file does not by itself cause the resulting executable to be covered = by the GNU General Public License. This exception does not however invalidate any other reasons why the executable file might be covered = by the GNU General Public License. Hopefully that text is self-explanatory. If it isn't, you need to speak = to your lawyer, or the Free Software Foundation. Q: So any program which uses libstdc++ falls under the GPL? A: No. The special exception permits use of the library in proprietary = applications.=20 OROSZI Bal=E1zs wrote: > Carlo wrote: >> dev-cpp comes with a GPL licensing scheme; this means that you can >> freely use it and redistribute it - together with sorces and a copy >> of the GPL license. Read here: http://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/libstdc++/17_intro/license.html And if you don't use C++, just C, then you are also allowed to make close= d source=20 applications. To be precise, there is no such thing: "dev-cpp libraries". Dev-C++ is ON= LY a frontend, a=20 GUI for GCC, nothing more. Go to http://www.mingw.org for details about t= he libraries. And=20 you may choose a commercial license, even if you link with MinGW librarie= s. So you may develop commercial applications with Dev-C++. Just take into a= ccount, that=20 DirectX has a different license. -- Greetings, Bal=E1zs |

This is just a sample code that compiles using the Microsoft C++ compiler but seems to be giving problems when compiled in Dev-C++. The problem is that I am trying to port a library to Dev-C++ but this kind of functionality has been used in the library and I am getting all sorts or wierd errors because of this. What am I missing out? Regards, Vivek Jishtu ------------------------------------------------ #include <iostream> class First{ public: void SomeWork() { std::cout <<"Inside SomeWork"; } }; class Second { public: void myfun(First &obj) { obj.SomeWork(); } }; int main() { Second Obj2; Obj2.myfun(First()); return 0; } __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Moreover, you can modify it or take pieces of code from it and insert them in a new work or link towards dynamic libraries but, according to GPL, the derived work *must* be GPL'd. When you use dev-cpp to edit, debug and compile your code you are only using a GPL application and, as long as your software does not contain pieces of code nor is dinamically linked towards dev-cpp libraries, you can release your work with the license you prefer (even a commercial one). A final consideration: I'm not a lawyer, and this matter is not so straitforward as someone can guess; I suggest you to take a look at GNU homepage for more documentation (included the 13 or so page GPL license) for more info. cheers |

However I am hoping that someone would be able to point me to some mailing lists that deal with this topic. Regards, Rio __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! In the last months I created a 3D engine based on Direct3D. I compiled it in Dev-C++ as dll. I intend to publish it in the internet. Of course I'll show the users the license agreement of Dev-C++. Would it be legally if I publish it in the internet? And would the users be allowed to sell games they made using this dll? I'd be thankful for a fast and obliging answer. With kind regards Christoph Peters. |

Hi, I whant to get and set the main volume. Well, I mean the value from the volume control at the tray bar from windows. I'm sure it could be done with the Windows API, but I don't know how... I tried it like this: double GetWaveVolumePercent(bool blLeft){ unsigned long ulCurrentVolume = 0; if(waveOutGetVolume(0, (LPDWORD) &ulCurrentVolume) == MMSYSERR_NOERROR){ if(blLeft) return double(double(LOWORD(ulCurrentVolume))*100.0/65535.0); else return double(double(HIWORD(ulCurrentVolume))*100.0/65535.0); } else return 0.0; } bool SetWaveVolumePercent(double dlValue, bool blLeft){ unsigned long ulCurrentVolume = 0; if(dlValue < 0.0) dlValue = 0.0; else if(dlValue > 100.0) dlValue = 100.0; if(waveOutGetVolume(0, (LPDWORD) &ulCurrentVolume) == MMSYSERR_NOERROR){ WORD ilNewVolume = int(double(65535.0)/100.0*dlValue); if(blLeft) ulCurrentVolume = ulCurrentVolume & 0xFFFF0000 | ilNewVolume; else ulCurrentVolume = ulCurrentVolume & 0x0000FFFF | ilNewVolume*0x10000; return waveOutSetVolume(0, ulCurrentVolume) == MMSYSERR_NOERROR; } else return false; } But this is not what I whant and doesn't work at all... I whant the main volume !!! Any suggestions ??? thx, Acki |

* PThreads are characteristic of UNIX enviroments and are not native implementations in Windows XP. Afortunately, Red Hat guys ported to win32. You can find them here http://sources.redhat.com/pthreads-win32/ This is a good choice, because the degree of portatibility is high. Of course you will need to link your program to the library. * Another option is to use the Win32 API, that although breaking the portability is often a good choice: no extra libs are required and usually gives a good performance. A lot of information and technical resources can be found at MSDN. A starting point could be: http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dllproc/base/processes_and_threads.asp * Finally, last but not least, if in addition to threads data structures such as liken lists and so on are used, a possibility is to use glib, ( http://www.gtk.org ) which brings a portable thread implementation. Hope this can help. Regards, Francisco P: Rio Mascarenhas wrote: >Hi, > I am using Dev-C++ version 4. Hi, I am using Dev-C++ version 4. I would like to know if its possible to compile multi-threaded programs with it on Windows (XP). I am not entirely new to C++, but I am new to multithreading. I have managed to get the basic programs running on Linux (with gcc), but compiling it on Dev-C++ gives me the error pthread.h : No such file or directory. Hi, Perhaps this is not the most appropriate place to post these questions, but I think I'll have good replies :-) - Does anybody recommend a good book or site with a good text on memory management in C/C++? - Does anybody know the book "Memory as a programming concept in C and C++" (Cambridge Press - link below)? (http://titles.cambridge.org/catalogue.asp?isbn=0521520436) There are some resources here "http://www.cas.mcmaster.ca/~franek/books.html". However, I'd like to have some advice about the whole book. I can comprehend the basics of that subject (pointers, memory allocation, heap, stack etc, but I am interested to have references with more details. I have some C/C++ books and lots of URLs "bookmarked", but all of them don't go too far on memory management as I would like. One of my main issues is whether function "main" and its local variables are allocated on the stack area as other functions. Regards and TIA, Rafael Charnovscki |

Don't expect to have it outside Borland's compilers. Having said that, there are some conio "wrappers", that make (most of) it work. IIRC Dev-C++ already comes with a simple conio implementation that have the basic functionalities, in the "include" dir. Just compile it into a library and link it to your program.
