Dev-C++ is for developing new stuff, not for compiling already written things. After that, you put the resulting libraries where either windows or dev-cpp or both can find it, depending what you want to do with them. Alex |

I was wondering if there was any way to get the environment to recognize Pro*C files. If you are not already familiar with these files, they end with a .pc and are essentially the same as a C file. The main exception to this is that in the make file it goes through an oracle pre-compiler to handle SQL statements embedded into the C code. This is then translated into a .c file which is then compiled to binary. It would be great if it handled files with the .pc extension on them as it does the .c,.h,.cpp...... etc. Is there a reg tweak, ini file, etc to get fool it into doing so. Thanks much. I appreciate your time. Mike. |

Ok, this is helping, thanks for the info. Now, this is definitely a gcc type package, which came in .tgz format. So, I untar it, and everything is in this complex directory structure. The "package" came with a configurator script, which I guess generates a makefile depending on the system the software is compiled on. Anyway, normally under linux, you would do a "make configure", "make ode-lib" etc... So, how do you do all of this with Dev-C++? Or, should I be using cygwin instead? Is there a way to recursively add files to a project, or do I have to pick them manually out of all those directories? If the libraries are for MSVC then you can use menu File / Import / MSVC project. Then there you will have to revise code to remove all MSVC stuff to have it working. If the library is GCC code, then you can create new project with dev-cpp. Then click Project / Add to project... and add all the *.c, *.cpp, *.h, *.hpp files into you project. You might also need to add main.cpp with some testing code or set project as static or dynamic library to avoid this. Dev-C++ creates its own makefile but if you want to use your one, you can pick it in Project options / Makefile / Use own makefile. Dev-C++ is kinda powerful tool but you need to play around with it for some time to discover all its abilities. --- Jan Ringoš, Tr...@mx... http://tringi.mx-3.cz ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sean Baumann" <drg...@ho...> To: <dev...@li...> Sent: Wednesday, March 31, 2004 5:38 PM Subject: [Dev-C++] Newbie Quesition > I'm trying to learn to use Dev-cpp 5, but I'm having a little trouble > figuring out how to compile programs that I download. Open Project options and add to C compiler and/or C++ compiler options box these lines: --save-temps -masm=intel --save-temps will leave *.ii and *.s files where *.ii is your source code after preprocesing and *.s are assembler files. -masm=intel will set assembler output to be in intel syntax, else it will be in at&t syntax which is kinda ugly (at least for me). But there are sometimes problems with using -masm=intel and gprof (profiler). --- Jan Ringos, Tr...@mx... http://tringi.mx-3.cz > What do I have to do to get an assembly language output listing? > > TIA, > Ken > > |

DrG, In the Dev-cpp IDE you need to open a project, then set up various things in the project, such as... libraries to be included, paths to search, etc. (The things that you normally would do on the command line???) Dev-cpp then "builds" the make file using your configuration options and executes it when you hit the compile button in the IDE. After you have created a new project, check out Project/Options on the menu. Mark -----Original Message----- From: dev...@li... With a dll you can even link directly to it, no need to use import libs. The problem is only with lib/dlls written in C++; those won't work even with impdef, because MSVC's C++ implementation is different from MinGW. Daniel K. O. |

afaik, gcc (mingw/cygwin) *cannot* use msvc import libs. using a tool called 'impdef', you can however generate a gcc-style import lib *from a dll* compiled with msvc. when building libs for gcc (mingw/cygwin), you end up with a file with an extension of '.a', not one of '.lib', which is what's generated by msvc/borland/watcom(for the first two, i'm sure, but not for the last). i'm not even sure that borland and msvc import libs are compatible, since when i was using borland to compile some msdn examples, there were runtime errors. apparently, borland expected some OWL (object windows library) info, and terminated the apps with a 'xyz missing in abc' type of message. for the python thingy, i've used dynamic linking to import functions from the dll, but it's a pain, since you have to consult the header files contantly and create your own typedefs, etc, which of course takes the fun out of learning how to embed python. you can take a look @ my blog and see more about the python on windows thing: http://phoenix.cowblock.net ___________________________________________________________ WIN FREE WORLDWIDE FLIGHTS - nominate a cafe in the Yahoo! when using the irrlicht demo, i found the dx renderer worked faster, but the graphics were a lot brighter with opengl. just my two cents, tho. ___________________________________________________________ WIN FREE WORLDWIDE FLIGHTS - nominate a cafe in the Yahoo! Hi Malcolm... (thank you for your attentions) Just to get the problem straight in my mind, you are trying to compile the examples which came with Irrlicht 0.5 in DevCpp? It's right. I would suggest downloading and installing the newer version 0.6 from the Irrlicht site. Did you download the DevPak for Irrlicht? Did you install the DevPak? No, but I will do it (I didn't know there was a devpak for irrlicht...). I believe that the code is being compiled for DirectX use, but the Irrlicht DLL which accompanied the program was not compiled with DirectX. As a user you have to recompile the SDK in order to use DirectX with Irrlicht. As a workaround look for a line in the source files which looks like: IrrlichtDevice *device =3D createDevice(video::EDT_DIRECTX8, = core::dimension2d<s32>(640, 480)); change it to IrrlichtDevice *device =3D createDevice(video::EDT_OPENGL, = core::dimension2d<s32>(640, 480)); Yes, it's right... I only wanted to try also directx=20 (I have never used it: open question: (I hope in a large number of opinions!)... which is better: OpenGL or = directX, ...and why? Thanks,=20 bye M. |

why in the world are you trying to compile a C file with C++ headers? you can't compile a C program with C++ headers! and i don't know if my email client (Yahoo!) is messed up, but your entire mail is showing as though you lost your Return/Enter key. ___________________________________________________________ WIN FREE WORLDWIDE FLIGHTS - nominate a cafe in the Yahoo!
