Hi, I would like to be able to read and write to a COM port, PCI bus and ISA bus using windows based C++. Is this idea possible? I have the SAMS Teach Yourself C++ 3rd edition book and got the C++ CD with Bloodshed Compiler and Dev-C++ IDE. What now? Thanks in advance for any help, Gary. |

Correction to previous post: somebody wrote (in a flawed tutorial) that = the API would avoid creating duplicate handles for a GDI resource. In this instance, I was declaring several HFONT objects with CreateFont() as dialog-scope variables, and forgetting to release them. I'm not sure = where I read that, or why I believed it, but it was back when I was first = starting C programming, and it didn't occur to me to look twice at it until today. It was not the Win32 API that said that. I misspoke in my previous post; = I should read what I write before hitting that magic send button... -Ed -----Original Message----- From: dev...@li... Happy new year all! If I customize the make file (now that I know how to do it), under what circumstances will it be overwritten by the GUI? I'm guess with a re-build all command. Would I be better off if I decided to do such a thing to just roll my own in a different filename like Makefile to avoid this? Thanks for your ideas. Patrick |

It must be dynamically linking then. Because otherwise there is no possible way you can get the exe that small when using the standard C++ library. That's probably a safe bet to make on Linux because you can be reasonably sure that the GCC standard C++ libraries will be available on any Linux distribution. You can't safely make that assumption in Windows. Hello World in Borland's C++ compiler using the standard C++ library on Windows produces a "hello world" executable that is a little over 100K in size. Mingw I think will get it down to a little over 200K after you use strip. No, the developers of Dev-C++ will not change anything since they are developing an IDE - an integrated environment - and not a compiler. No, the developers of MinGW will not change anything either, since they are "just" creating a port of the gcc compiler for use in the Win32 environment. Maybe, but with not too large probability, the GNU project might look into the implementation of the c++ RTL, and see if they can split in into smaller modules to allow the linker to better strip away unused code from the RTL. The next thing to think about is that a binary linked with a static library will get A LOT bigger than a binary linked with dynamic libraries. /Per W On Mon, 29 Dec 2003, Jack Chen wrote: > So then C++ compiled files will be 10x bigger than C compiled ones? So then C++ compiled files will be 10x bigger than C compiled ones? Man I made a program that draws 3D objects with OpenGL and graphical interface with GTK. It's C code and the exe is only 34KB. Hi all :: Trivial defence ... I recall several months !! Dealing with this on the = Microsoft compiler at transition time circa. 1997 and '98. Can you give us some examples of these error messages? What happens if you do an even more simple piece of code (without the iostream library) such as int main(int argc, char** argv) { int SmlNumber = 5; int BigNumber = 50; int TempNumber; TempNumber = SmlNumber + BigNumber; return TempNumber; } Also I do hope you are not teaching students to use depreciated styles of coding (the .h extention for example). >From: William W Cridland <wa...@ju...> >To: dev...@li... >Subject: [Dev-C++] re+ Public Domain C++ IDE >Date: Mon, 29 Dec 2003 13:16:08 -0800 > >I have downloaded your C++ IDE 1991 and looks great . Hi Michal, you wrote: > the devpak repository project is opened > at http://molhanec.net/devpaks/. Great work. But I think there should be some limitation in creating new categories. First they should be general, like 3d Graphics, Multimediaplatfrom or Framesets. Second not everyone should be allowed to create new categories, maybe only a 'moderator' can create new, if there are in one category too much devpacks of the same kind. So far so _very_ good. > It tries to be repository of links > to devpaks, so go and add your devpaks > there :-). Maybe the project could be moved to a opensource platform like http://www.berlios.de/index.php.en or http://savannah.nongnu.org/. Then all the DevPacks could be hosted on these pages without any bandwidthproblems. so long Tim |

It's a common problem: the C++ standard is changed and so your program, as most of those learned by students, is incorrect. The actual C++ standard library, as described in Stroustrup 3rd edition, has the following form for an hello-world program: #include <iostream> int main() { std::cout << "Hello world!" << std::endl; } The old library is still present, but in a backward compatibility directory that is not guaranteed to be supported in future. Hello all, the devpak repository project is opened at http://molhanec.net/devpaks/ . It tries to be repository of links to devpaks, so go and add your devpaks there :-). Michal |
