I get the following error when I attempt to compile the program below. I think the problem has something to do with the resource files, shown below. Try this, #include <stdlib.h> /*enter here youre code*/ system ("PAUSE"); return (0) This will do the trick. gzu...@de... ----- Original Message ----- From: Richard Asbury <dic...@ho...> To: <dev...@li...> Sent: Friday, March 30, 2001 3:09 PM Subject: Re: [Dev-C++] Getting screen to stay up > >Whenever I try to run a simple program that I've got out of a book, > >FAQ etc., which has been compiled successfully, it briefly flashes > >up on the screen & disappears . > > there's a little tutorial for dev-c++ which has a bit of code that you might > find useful... > > http://www.geocities.com/uniqueness_template/ > > it's about half way down, under the title 'disappearing windows'. to use it, > you'll have to #include <iostream> at the top of the .cpp file, and you'll > either need to have a 'using namespace std' at the top of the file (or in > the funciton that uses the code), or else put std:: before every occurance > of cin and cout. > > hth, > > richard > _________________________________________________________________________ > Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. > > > _______________________________________________ > Dev-cpp-users mailing list > Dev...@li... > http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/dev-cpp-users |

Is there documentation anywhere on how to create and use resources in DevC++? I know a fair amount of C++, but I am just learning the basics of windows programming, and I understand how resources are handled varies much from compiler to compiler. Thanks, Alan |

>Only thing is, sometimes the Dev-C++ does not like the code. Why >doesn't dev-c++ resource builder take lines that start with CONTROL "",...? I haven't had any trouble with CONTROL lines per se, but make sure it's not using some weird external control (there will be a parameter somewhere in the CONTROL line specifying a filename) because the dev-c++ resource compiler doesn't seem to like these. I noticed this specifically with slider controls (as opposed to scroll bars), but i suspect several things could cause this sort of problem. richard _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. |

You can also use #include <conio.h> _getch() ( i.e. underscore and getch() ) this function will not echo the character on the screen. conio functions are useful for console programs, it is not classed as standard on all compilers though. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kenneth Macaulay" <k2...@ho...> To: <dev...@li...> Sent: Friday, March 30, 2001 4:22 AM Subject: [Dev-C++] RE:(DevC++)newbie > Am new to DevC++. > Whenever I try to run a simple program that I've got out of a book, > FAQ etc., which has been compiled successfully, it briefly flashes > up on the screen & disappears . ie. - > #include <iostream.h> > #include <stdlib.h> > > int main() > { > cout<<"HEY, you, I'm alive! Search for a file called "resource hacker". This lets you look at code for dialogs from any program (and other resources). It is meant for changing other programs, but can be useful for learning. You can easily make dialogs in this and copy the code, or "integrate" them into your final .exe file afterwards. Only thing is, sometimes the Dev-C++ does not like the code. Why doesn't dev-c++ resource builder take lines that start with CONTROL "",...? -----Original Message----- From: dev...@li... Hi all. please could someone tell me how one would go about making things in a windows app, such as: showing text area's where you enter text drop down menu's buttons radio butons. i know there is a lot there, but i would be really greatful if even just one was answered. thanks. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. _______________________________________________ Dev-cpp-users mailing list Dev...@li... http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/dev-cpp-users |

Delete the first return 0 -- your code is not reaching the system("PAUSE") which will let you see the console window's output. |

>Whenever I try to run a simple program that I've got out of a book, >FAQ etc., which has been compiled successfully, it briefly flashes >up on the screen & disappears . there's a little tutorial for dev-c++ which has a bit of code that you might find useful... http://www.geocities.com/uniqueness_template/ it's about half way down, under the title 'disappearing windows'. to use it, you'll have to #include <iostream> at the top of the .cpp file, and you'll either need to have a 'using namespace std' at the top of the file (or in the funciton that uses the code), or else put std:: before every occurance of cin and cout. hth, richard _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. |

I found these definitions in my archive ********************************************************************** There are two slightly different formats for file inclusion: one using "" and the other using <> 1) #include <myfile.h> says to look in established system directories for the file to include. How these system directories are established and where they are located is system dependent; that is, it depends upon the system on which you are working. 2) #include "myfile.h" says to look in your current directory for the file. If not found there, the preprocessor will look in the system directory. This is not necessarily true for all compilers/preprocessors. ********************************************************************* This is from WinAPI The #include directive causes resource compiler to process the file specified in the filename parameter. This file should be a header file that defines the constants used in the resource-definition file. Use the statement #ifndef RC_INVOKED in your header file to surround statements that can be compiled by a C compiler but not RC. This way, you can use the same include files in your .C and .RC files. Syntax #include filename Parameter filename Specifies the name of the file to be included. If the file is in the current directory, the string must be enclosed in double quotation marks; if the file is in the directory specified by the INCLUDE environment variable, the string must be enclosed in less-than and greater-than characters (<>). You must give a full path enclosed in double quotation marks (") if the file is not in the current directory or in the directory specified by the INCLUDE environment variable. Example This example processes the header files WINDOWS.H and HEADERS\MYDEFS.H while compiling the resource-definition file: #include <windows.h> #include "headers\mydefs.h" ********************************************************************** As a rule of thumb I can say 1) If you're including headers from the compiler/stl/etc use <> 2) If you're including your own header files use "" Hope this clarifies Chemanuel --- Michael Potter <mdp...@ya...> wrote: > I believe that the <> will search for the file in the > include directories as specified in Dev_C++. > > The "" will use the systems (windows) path resolution. > > Anyone else have a better definition? __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? at end of program try typing system("PAUSE"); this will hold the screen untill the user hits any key....or you can use as you mentioned in your email a getchar() or gets() statement. You run the console app and windows closes it when you are done:) before your return add make sure you include <iostream.h>(I think thats the one.) System("PAUSE"); Kenneth Macaulay wrote: > Am new to DevC++. Am new to DevC++. Whenever I try to run a simple program that I've got out of a book, FAQ etc., which has been compiled successfully, it briefly flashes up on the screen & disappears . ie. - #include <iostream.h> #include <stdlib.h> int main() { cout<<"HEY, you, I'm alive! Oh, and Hello World!"; return 0; system("PAUSE"); return 0; } or : - #include <iostream.h> int main() { cout << "Hello World!\n"; return (0); } Started doing some C++ a while ago and there was a Getche() command to make the screen stay up - is there something similar ? If someone can help me out with some sample programs, FAQ's etc., or tell me where to get them would be greatly appreciated . I believe that the <> will search for the file in the include directories as specified in Dev_C++. The "" will use the systems (windows) path resolution. You should use the " " if the include files aren't in the same directory as the compilers directory.(Set the path to....) You must use the <> if the include files are in the compilers directory. ----- Original Message ----- From: Andre` Niel Cameron <ca...@op...> To: <dev...@li...> Sent: Thursday, March 29, 2001 2:46 PM Subject: Re: [Dev-C++] stl and windows apps > I have a quick question how do you know when to use "" or <> when typing > includes?
