Subject: How do I clone CentOS Linux Server to Synology NAS device using Clonezilla? Good day from Singapore, How do I clone CentOS Linux Server to Synology NAS device using Clonezilla? cPanel web hosting control panel was installed on the CentOS Linux Server. If my memory did not fail me, it was a CentOS 7.9 Linux server. I am looking for a well-written guide that won't give conflicting instructions. Please advise. Thank you. Hi Joel, Program "dcs" will check if it's on DRBL server (where the directory /tftpboot/nbi_img/pxelinux.cfg exists). You must run dcs as root on DRBL server (Clonezilla SE server). Oh, you have to run command "dcs" as root, there please run: sudo dcs Or you can login as root, then run "dcs". Thanks in advance for any help. When I run dcs I get this message: [root@ibm12 Downloads]# dcs [joel] You should run this program /usr/sbin/dcs in DRBL server, NOT in DRBL client or other machine. Program terminated! Any idea what I missed? I'm am on the server and on Cent OS 6.8. There seem to be a few files not found during my drblpush but I'm not sure how to get them. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Here's my drblpush output: [root@ibm12 Downloads]# drblpush -i ****************************************************** Hint! When a yes/no option is available, the default value is uppercase, Ex. (y/N), the default is "N", when you press "Enter", it will use "N". If you are not sure which one to choose, you can just press "Enter" key. ****************************************************** Searching the installed packages for DRBL server...This might take several minutes... If you already have those MAC addresses of clients, you can put them into different group files (These files number is the same number of networks cards for DRBL service). In this case, you can skip this step. This step helps you to record the MAC addresses of clients, then divide them into different groups. It will save your time and reduce the typos. The MAC addresses will be recorded turn by turn according to the boot of clients, and they will be put into different files according to the network card in server, file name will be like macadr-eth1.txt, macadr-eth2.txt... You can find them in directory /etc/drbl. Please boot the clients by order, make sure they boot from etherboot or PXE! Do you want to collect them? (a) The client machine memory is recommended at least 256 MB. (b) The setting and config files of client will not be saved to the DRBL server! They are just used once and will vanish after the machine shutdowns! Besides, if you modify any file in the template client (located in /tftpboot/nodes), you have to run drbl-gen-ssi-files to create the template tarball in /tftpboot/node_root/drbl_ssi/. (c) If you want to provide some file to overwrite the setting in the template tarball when client boots, check /tftpboot/node_root/drbl_ssi/clients/00_README for more details. [0] Full DRBL mode is chosen! ****************************************************** ------------------------------------------------------ In the system, there are 4 modes available for clonezilla: [0] Full Clonezilla mode, every client has its own NFS based /etc and /var. [1] Clonezilla box mode, every client uses tmpfs based /etc and /var. In this mode, the loading and necessary disk space of server will be lighter than that in Full Clonezilla mode. Note! In Clonezilla box mode, the setting and config files of client will not be saved to the DRBL server! They just use once and will vanish after the machine shutdowns! [2] I do NOT want clonezilla. [3] Use Clonezilla live as the OS (Operating System) of clients (Testing). Which mode do you prefer? [0] Full clonezilla mode is set! ****************************************************** ****************************************************** The CPU arch for clients when running Clonezilla job: i386 ------------------------------------------------------ When using clonezilla, which directory in this server you want to store the saved image (Please use absolute path, and do NOT assign it under /mnt/, /media/ or /tmp/)? [/home/partimag] Directory for clonezilla saved images: /home/partimag ------------------------------------------------------ If there is a local harddrive with swap partition or writable file system in your client machine, do you want to use that swap partition or create a swap file in the writable filesystem so that client has more memory to use? (This step will NOT destroy any data in that harddisk) [Y/n] ****************************************************** OK! We will try to create a swap space for your client if it has a local hard drive! ------------------------------------------------------ What's the maximun size (Megabytes) for the swap space? We will try to allocate the swap space for you, if it's not enough, 60% of the free space will be used. [128] maxswapsize=128 ****************************************************** ------------------------------------------------------ Which mode do you want the clients to use after they boot? "1": Graphic mode (X window system) (default), "2": Text mode. [1] The clients will enter graphic mode after booting. ****************************************************** ------------------------------------------------------ Which mode do you want when client boots in graphic mode? 0: normal login, 1: auto login, 2: timed login [0] The clients will wait for user to login when they boot. ****************************************************** ------------------------------------------------------ Do you want to set the root's password for clients instead of using same root's password copied from server? (For better security) [y/N] OK! Let's continue... ------------------------------------------------------ Do you want to set the pxelinux password for clients so that when client boots, a password must be entered to startup (For better security) [y/N] OK! Let's continue... ------------------------------------------------------ Do you want to set the boot prompt for clients? [Y/n] How many 1/10 sec is the boot prompt timeout for clients? [70] OK! Let's continue... ------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------ Do you want to use graphic background for PXE menu when client boots? Note! If you use graphical PXELinux menu, however client fails to boot, you can switch to text mode by running "switch-pxe-bg-mode -m text". [Y/n] Use graphic PXE Linux menu for the client. ------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------ By using alias interface, every client can have 2 IPs, one of them is private IP for clients connected to DRBL server, and the other is public IP for clients directly connected to WAN from switch! Do you want to setup public IP for clients? [y/N] ------------------------------------------------------ Do you want to let DRBL clients have an option to run terminal mode? i.e. you want to let that client run remote display (which will mostly use resources of server), say "Y" here. Note! 0. If you say yes to this option, this will be a very limited environment for client, i.e. NO local access for USB, CD, audio, printer, etc. in client. 1. If your server is not powerful, say "no" here. 2. By saying "yes" here, we will turn on xdmcp, It is never a safe thing to turn on that. Setting up /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny to only allow local access is another alternative but not the safest. Firewalling port 177 is the safest if you wish to have xdmcp on. Read the manual for more notes on the security of XDMCP. Please set it by yourself! 3. If you say "yes" here, you might have to restart your desktop environment manager (gdm/kdm) later, remember to save your data before you close applications! Do you want to let client has an option to run terminal mode? [y/N] OK! Let's continue... ------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------ Do you want to let DRBL server as a NAT server? If not, your DRBL client will NOT be able to access Internat. [Y/n] OK! Let's continue... ------------------------------------------------------ ****************************************************** dnsdomainname: Unknown host The running kernel in the server supports NFS over TCP! Note! If you change the running kernel in the server, and not sure whether the kernel supports NFS over udp or tcp, you'd better to re-run "drblpush -i" again to avoid the client boots in failure! Press Enter to continue... ------------------------------------------------------ ****************************************************** The calculated NETWORK for eth1 is 192.168.101.0. ****************************************************** ****************************************************** We are now ready to deploy the files to system! Do you want to continue? Warning! If you go on, your firewall rules will be overwritten during the setup! Thank you Florian! This should not be as hard to find and guess to modify an essential setting like the NFS server which you would like to use. Any ideas where I could request/suggest a change ? This lines in /tftpboot/node_root/sbin/init # Find NFS server for i in $NFSSERVER_LIST; do # Use the clients-of-$nfsserver.txt in the common root. if [ -n "$(grep -Ew "$IP" /etc/drbl/clients-of-${i}.txt 2>/dev/null)" ]; then nfsserver="$i" break fi done if [ -z "$nfsserver" ]; then # No NFS server found. Use plan B. Try to use gateway as NFS server gateway="$(LANG=C route -n | awk '/^0.0.0.0/ {print $2}')" if [ -n "$gateway" ]; then nfsserver=$gateway else echo "NFSSERVER is not found, use default one: \"$nfsserver_default\"." nfsserver=$nfsserver_default fi fi if [ -n "$nfsserver" ]; then echo "NFS server is $nfsserver." else echo "No NFS Server was found!" echo "Program terminated!" exit 1 fi should be in my opinion , otherwise what's the point in having a default nfs server if it always falls back to the gateway, and also this setting should be far more easy to find and to set. # Find NFS server for i in $NFSSERVER_LIST; do # Use the clients-of-$nfsserver.txt in the common root. if [ -n "$(grep -Ew "$IP" /etc/drbl/clients-of-${i}.txt 2>/dev/null)" ]; then nfsserver="$i" break fi done if [ -z "$nfsserver_default" ]; then # No NFS server found. Hello -- We are planning on deploying the server edition as part of our disaster recovery solution, and one of my colleagues wanted to know if it can be done on a virtual machine. Has anyone done such a deployment? If so, what would you recommend for hardware specifications on the host system, assuming there will be other virtual machines running, and what issues should I be aware of before proceeding with this course of action? Thanks. The information in this e-mail is intended only for the person to whom it is addressed. We can use SE to get to the point where it tells us to boot the client using pxe, but cannot boot the clients using pxe, but we can usb boot clonezilla. Can we issue a command at this point on each client to initiate the multicast? Do you know if your USB based LAN adaptor works with ipxe/gpxe? If so, then it would be easier. Just use it. If not, you still can boot clonezilla live to do that, but some manually commands or customization have to be issued from the client sides: http://clonezilla.org/clonezilla-SE/use_clonezilla_live_in_drbl.php This is the mode we use Clonezilla live in Clonezilla SE mode. In this case the server side is described on that URL, but the client side normally it's boot via PXE. After you use dcs to switch mode to "clonezilla start", from the file /tftpboot/nbi_img/pxelinux.cfg/default you can find a block about PXE booting Clonezilla live for the multicast restoring mode (Normally it's in the end of that file). Just borrow that to your Clonezilla live boot media, say it's a USB stick, put it in the syslinux/syslinux.cfg. Then you should be able to boot your USB stick for multicast restoring. Please let us know the results. Thanks. Hi, Clonezilla SE is included in DRBL, so either you can use live system, i.e. DRBL live (http://drbl.org/download/) or you can setup a DRBL server (http://drbl.org/installation/) for that. When you run "drblpush -i", there is a step that allows you to collect the MAC addresses of client machines. Say yes to that and follow the interactive steps to finish that. Once you have done that, you will get a text file, and the next step will ask you if you want to provide the static IP addresses for clients, say "yes" to that and enter the file name (the default file name should match the one you have collected). I have created a DRBL server on Ubuntu 12.04LTS. I would like to assign ip addresses to hardware mac addresses so clients can receive the same ip address when they sign into the PXE server. Yes, I am aware that there is an ip-to-hostname file but I think that is meant for pushing images to multiple clients. I have used Clonezilla-live for years and store images on a ssh server. I would like to setup DRBL/Clonezilla SE to do image backups via PXE client logins. Eliminating the need to boot from a live-cd. I have a small home lan consisting of three computers I would like to backup. So, my needs are simple but, the lan is growing. I tried entering mac address assignments into the /etc/dhcp/dhcp.conf file. That broke the PXE login. Clients could not 'find' the dhcp server and hung searching. Removing my mac address assignments corrected the dhcp search and clients once again could log in. I have searched the mailing list archives and could not locate any references to assigning ip to mac address. Has anyone done this before? -- Robert Wooden Nashville, TN. USA Computer Freedom? . . . Hi, i'm trying to run clonezilla on zentyal-server. Zentyal is a ubuntu 12.04 based distribution for SMBs with a webbased graphical interface. At the time i installed clonezilla in a virtual machine, removed the cloenzilla DHCPserver and on the zentyal dhcp i set the "next-server"-option to clonezilla-server (see http://sourceforge.net/projects/clonezilla/forums/forum/799287/topic/3284158?message=7417688 ). This is working fine. But i want to integrate clonezilla without using a virtual machine. For this is good to know, which conf-files could be change/overwritten when executing clonezilla (or one of the scripts in /.../sbin/). Does someone know this? Thank you |

The partition table in this disk is illegal/invalid: /dev/sda It's not supported by parted. Parted is used in clonezilla to parse the filesystem in the partition table. This partition table is detected as WRONG by parted! The error messages from parted are: ##################### Error: Could not stat device /dev/sda - no such file or directory. #################### > > Apparently the liveCD is capable of detecting my drive and partitions but the SE is not. Is there a way to solve this issue? I'm really hoping you could help me out over here, i'll try to compensate your efforts via a donation. When you mention Live CD, did you mean Clonezilla live? Not DRBL live? If it's not DRBL live, maybe you can try the version 1.0.8-12 available here: http://drbl.sourceforge.net/download/sourceforge/live-testing/iso-zip-files.php It might detect your hard disk. Or if your Clonezilla SE is on an older OS, you can try this method: http://clonezilla.org/use_clonezilla_live_in_drbl.php and use the working Clonezilla live, e.g. 1.2.12-55 or 20120509-precise as client's OS when running Clonezilla SE. It should work for you. When I want to save the image for my server's disk, you can either provide the name and select the disk to backup from the DRBL server, or let them be selected on the DRBL client. With the first option, the client fails to find the sda disk. If I don't specify a disk when configuring PXE for the client and enter sda when in the client's console, everything works. This said, I made progress since and think I may have found my solution. First, I changed the clonezilla mode from 0 to 3 to use Clonezilla live. This allowed me to save image of partitions (haven't tried disk, think it's still having issues, but I don't really need it). For restoring, I also had to enter expert options and have the client skip hardware detection. This allowed me to successfully restore the image I had just saved. My last problem is the GRUB menu generated actually waits for someone to press enter, but I should be able to fix this today and move on. :) Thanks, Steve Molloy Content Analytics Lead | R&D Phone: Website: www.opentext.com We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.
