The problem was fixed after downloading a csv file from Scopus again. I repeated everything as I used to but this time it worked. I guess Scopus might have some issues.
Hello. Could you please help me one more time with the conversion of the file? Again, I cannot run the converted file successfully on CiteSpace. I am attaching here a CSV file. Thank you very much in advance.
Hi Dr. Chen, i hope you can help me with this, the metric burstness is calculated using the keywords in the cited references? or it takes the cited year and the number of citation only? Thank you
Yes, it is possible as ties are allowed and top 50 distinct values are used to select qualified items. Thus each year there can be more than 50 qualified items.
Dear Professor Chen, in the co-authorship analysis (attached image) more nodes appear than the possible nodes according to the parameters set (Top 50, 5 years per slice, period 1988 to 2023). Is this possible???, because I think not and in the rest of the analysis with the same data and parameters and same program version this doesnt happen.!!
Dear Prof Chen, good day! Can version 6.3.R3 merge the institutions according to the need? Do I need to buy CiteSpace (Standard) if I want to use version 6.3.R3 for Macbook?
Thank you. I did what you suggested and the following report showed on the terminal window. Is this because of too much article data? Exception: java.lang.OutOfMemoryError thrown from the UncaughtExceptionHandler in thread "Thread-0" Exception: java.lang.OutOfMemoryError thrown from the UncaughtExceptionHandler in thread "Connection evictor"
Hi Dr. Chen, thank you in advance for your help! I downloaded the adjacency matrix and i put it in MATLAB to try to obtain the same values of betweness centrality of citespace but the standar function gives me very high values and i found out that is possible to normalized to get values between 0 and 1, but i keep failing to get the same values citespace is calculating, there is another step i must consider?, theres another method to calculated betweness centrality? Example: n = number of nodes bc...
Thanks for your response!
Prepocess your data with Data > WoS > Duplicate Removal. Then try again.

An adjacency matrix is represented in two files when you export it from CiteSpace. For example, if you have a 561-node network, you will get two files: network561x561.txt and network561x561Labels.txt. Depending on what you need, most of the information is accessible through the interactive visualization in CiteSpace. Of course, you can do whatever you need with these exported files. Node names are in the labels file, like this, i.e., 561 lines: SHAH B, 1997, SUDAAN USERS MANUAL, V0, P0 IMM NAT SERV,...
I will double check.
CR = Cited References. Here is what it looks like. It is essential if you choose References as the Note Type. The issue with the Scopus author has been resolved in the Advanced version 6.3.R3. Should be available in the next Basic version soon.
Do you have a screenshot of the first few lines of the exceptions? I suspect it may be caused by some irregularities in the data. If the problem remains, email me more details along with the dataset, I will take a close look.
Dear Professor I have a doubt about the values of the adjacency matrix, I saw that the values are between 0 and 1, is this something like the weight between nodes? Do you have a paper where this values are explained? Thank you in advance.
You should try with the csv version of downloaded bibliobraphic data from Scopus. The RIS file has some issues while converting, while the csv one work fine.
Respected Sir, I have been facing the same issue even with the updated version 6.3R2. I have tried both options: modifying the 'citespace.alias' file manually and through the GUI, but nothing seem to work. I hope this issue will be resolved soon.
I have the same problem. and I didn't know how to solve that. what is CR field?
The issue in duplication when emerge literature date set from two database
Hi I am processing data from Web Of Science. Around 150.000 articles. I hit go and it starts processing. Exceptions get thrown in the terminal window and after a while it says "Process is terminated". It works great with smaller datasets but this one doesn't make it. What can I do? All the best /L

Dear Prof. Chen, Greetings !! Even after downloading the latest version of CiteSpace in my Macbook,. It pops up the following message, when i open the downloaded software: CiteSpace” can’t be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software. This software needs to be updated. Contact the developer for more information. Kindly suggest Thanks
It seems that the problem still exists. Hope it can be fixed.
Dear Professor Chen, Thank you for your prompt reply. According to your point, I changed all privilege of user/chunlingyu/.citespace folder to "read&write", and error of pic2 seemed to be solved. However, I still cannot get my concept tree. The errors now are in two cases: 1. If I select phrases from titles, error would be pic9. A file named etswos0.txt was created in user/chunlingyu/.citespace folder at the same time. 2. If I select phrases from titles and abstract, the errors would be pic4-->ok-->pic5-->ok-->pic3....
Your pic2 shows the problem: SQL Query Error: OS errno 13 - Permission denied It tries to create a file under /Users/chunlingyu/.citespace but permission was denied.
For your information, I searched resolutions by myself and have done the following two things. 1. create etc/my.cnf file and the 'secure_file_priv' error seemed to be solved. The results to "mysql> show variables like 'secure_file_priv'" command in terminal truns from pic6 to pic7. 2. I tried to solve the "OS errno 13: permission denied" error in pic2, with running terminal command shown in pic8. Although I can then get access to /usr/local/mysql/data/, the error in pic2 still occurs. I feel helpless...
Dear Professor Chen, (Citespace version is 6.3.1, MySQL version 8.0.36. The computer system is macOS Monterey version 12.4. ) Thank you very much for your reply to my previous question on MySQL connection. With your new version on 3/22/2024, my CiteSpace successfully connected to MySQL. Then I have a new problem on visualize a hierarchy of phrases. I imported my largest cluster, extracted phrases from titles and abstract as instructed in your "Visualize a hierarchy of terms.pdf". I think up to this...
The new version posted today should fix the issue (Built date: 3/22/2024).
Dear Professor Chen, Hi. I am encounting with a problem of MySQL database connection. The Citespace version is 6.3.1, and MySQL version is 8.0.36. The computer system is macOS Monterey version 12.4. I finished the co-citation cluster analysis with Citespace and want to further study the none phrase concept tree, but when I click Data->Import/Export->MySQL->Database, it says "A problem encountered when attempting to onnect your MySQL at localhost" (pic1). Then I click "update my login credentials"...
Thanks for letting me know. A new version will be available soon, including this fix.
Good day, Somehow Merge Nodes Using Aliases does not seem to be working in 6.3R1 even though I think I have set all the parameters and created citespace.alias interactively through the graphical user interface. I could be doing something wrong. Please help. I have attached a screenshot
I've double-checked it and it downloads fine. Have you tried different browser, e.g., Chrome? Please use the citespace.podia.com to communicate. It will hopefully get my attention quicker.
Dear Chen The exact issue is that I cannot download the new version in that website as we have two icons as below: demo.6.2.R7.mov (239 MB) and CiteSpace-6.2.7.msi (135 MB) But the first one (demo) is active and you can click on it to download , but the second one which is the new version is not active and it is impossible to download it . So please let me know how can I do that in any ways, as I really lost the time during two weeks I am waiting for the tickets. Thanks a lot Mojtaba
I have some issues about upgrade new version and other issues
Dear Mojtaba, You should be able to download the new Advanced version from citespace.podia.com using the same way as you did last time. Generally speaking, the newer version should be more reliable and accurate. Discrepancies between different versions may be due to improved processing capabilities of the newer version as well as possible changes of the default settings. You can also leave your comments on the citespace.podia.com site.
Dear all I used "all in one" to cluster the map and filter the top 5 clusters. Based on the table, I find that the words "machine learning" are both in cluster#0 and cluster#2, but there is no overlap between these two clusters. I consider that these 2 clusters share the same node(machine learning), so these two clusters should have a little overlay. I kindly ask anyone who knows the reason to answer me. Thank you very much.

Can you attach the original data file from scopus? Which version of CiteSpace did you use? Basic or Advanced?
hello Mr Chen I have a problem with files converted from scopus directly to the latest citespace version. Viewing cited journal shows incomprehensible codes such as CW ,ET AL, numbers like 1,2,11. I'll send you the screenshots. Conversion is still a problem. Can I have a wos type format for the conversion I would be very grateful.
Thanks for drawing my attention. Let me check.
It is nothing unusual to have nodes with 0 betweenness centrality. It is perfectly fine. Check the definition of betweenness centrality.
Dear Professor Chen, When I use CiteSpace 6.2.R6 for authors co-citation analysis (WOS data), ANONYMOUS becomes the largest node in the results. I considered hiding this node, but it involves some very highly cited articles. Using other versions didn't solve the problem. The core issue: the authors of several articles are not recognized because Citespace recognizes some letters (such as A and U) as ANONYMOUS, as shown below. But the original data is complete. How to solve this problem? I sincerely...

After generating the keyword clustering graph, I found that the centrality of this keyword is 0. After I clicked on calculate centrality, it is still 0. Is there any reason for this? Do you have any suggestion? Thank you very much.
Open the CSV file in Notepad++. If you see UFT-8-BOM at the bottom right corner, remove the BOM as follows: Go to the Encoding menu, select UTF-8 and save the file.
I solved it (I guess) by refresh but it's taking longer than usual. Thank you!
Unable to open viz file sucessfully in CS Advanced 6.2 R6
I'm trying to remove that but I don't understand how to remove that using text editor, do you mind to help me remove the BOM or convert that so I can operate it with this amazing program. I'm still new user here by using the (basic) version. Thank you🙏
At the beginning of your CSV file, there is "", which is known as a Byte Order Mark (BOM). See the attached image. 6.2.R6 (Advanced) released today (11/26/2023) can take care of this programmatically, but you can mannually remove it with a text editor.
Hello, I've the same problem. I don't know I've tried to follow the instruction for converting Scopus database into Wos (.csv -> tab-delimited -> WoS) but the result of the conversion is 0 kb when I checked the java script it says missing line... Can you help me to solve this? What should I do in the future? Fyi I use the updated version (at least till 27 Nov 23). Thank you so much
Thank you so much. It worked :-)
You probably missed the step to convert the CSV to a tab-delimited format before running the CSV converter. Attached is the converted and duplicates removed file.
When I try to convert txt file on my pc, Citespace gives me this message: DataGUI 127: data.properties (Access is denied)
Can you kindly attach the converted file? I will try to run that one. The new version is 6.2.4.msi , right? Thank you very much for your time and efforts. Much appreciated.
Chaomei has released a new version with which I was able to import the file (albeit with a relatively high N of invalid references) download_Scopus.txt has been converted. Total References: 360994 Valid References: 341567(94.0%) Timeslicing the converted file gives Records Found in Total 10882 Unique Records 10877 Duplicated Records 5 Invalid Records 0 Unique Records by Source 10877
I cannot convert this either...
This is a CSV file which contains cited references.
This is downloaded from Scopus and it does not include references. Thank you.
Can you share the ris file?
You are right. I will try to specify all the steps I took: 1. downloaded RIS file from Scopus 2. converted the file in Citespace (input (data) file was named as per the formula - download_* .txt) 3. created a new project; saved it and tried to run it (indicated the folders respectively) 4. the result: no nodes/links found I repeated all the above steps but this time with CSV from Scopus (as I saw one of Dr. Chen's comments on forum that RIS is not working properly on Scopus, and we can try to convert...

It's hard to help if you don't specify what you've tried. I'd recommend watching Chaomei's latest walkthrough video .

Citespace unable to process the data either from WoS or Scopus. For the last three days, I have spent hours trying all the possible ways, but there seems to be a problem with the software. I even tried converting Scopus CSV as per Dr. Chen's recommendation but in vain. Any suggestions?Thank you.

See FAQ 4.7. Your setting is not the same: e=1.0 vs e=2.0. It is also possible to see some minor differences between different versions due to internal changes.
Dear Processor Chen, I am a user of CiteSpace standard. I am writing to ask you some questions about the process of using CiteSpace standard. In the CiteSpace standard, I am unable to drag the nodes. It seems that the dragging functionality is not working properly. This makes it difficult for me to organize and arrange the nodes in the desired manner. Additionally, my supervisor has requested me to replicate a specific knowledge map from a research paper. However, even with the exact same raw data,...
