The first day of the month of May is known as May Day. It is the time of year when people celebrate the coming of summer with lots of different customs after a long winter. Traditional English May Day celebrations include Morris dancing, crowning a May Queen & Maypole Dancing. May Day celebrations have been carried out in England for over 2000 years.
Shrove Tuesday pancake races in England
Schoolchildren participate in the annual Shrove Tuesday Women's Trans-Atlantic Pancake Race on Feb. 12 in Olney, England. Every year women from Olney and the U.S. town of Liberal, Kan., race with a pancake in their pan, flipping it at the beginning and end of the race. Pancakes are associated with Shrove Tuesday because they were a traditional way to use up rich foods such as milk, eggs and sugar before the start of the 40-day fasting season of Lent.
