Voters in southeast South Dakota returned Republican state Reps. Chris Kassin and Bill Shorma to the state House Tuesday night.
In unofficial results in House District 17, Kassin, of Vermillion, led with 6,680 votes, while Shorma, of Dakota Dunes, finished second with 5,479 votes. Democrat Ray Ring, a former state legislator from Vermillion, trailed with 4,200 votes. Â
In South Dakota, voters elect one senator and two House members from each of the 35 districts.
District 17, which takes in the southern two-thirds of Union County, including Dakota Dunes, North Sioux City and Elk Point, and most of Clay County, including Vermillion.
Kassin, vice president of external affairs for the University of South Dakota Foundation, and Shorma, a Dakota Dunes businessman, are seeking their second, two-year terms in the House. A former state senator, Shorma returned to the state Legislature after a a six-year absence.

Ring, a retired economist and professor at the University of South Dakota, served in the House from 2013 to 2021. He represented the former District 17, which took in Clay and Turner counties.
Sen. Sydney Davis, R-Burbank, ran unopposed to win re-election in Senate District. Davis is returning to Pierre in January for a third term.
