The fifth episode of Experiences of International Education is out. We have the pleasure to hearing from Jazreel Goh, Director of British Council Malaysia, (and former Director of Education British Council China), who shares her passion for international education as a life-changing opportunity, starting from when she met an international education advisor as an international student preparing to go to Australia. Jazreel reminds us of the importance of not losing sight of the 'very unique experience of very unique individuals' when we work in international education. '...international education can sometimes move very far away from …the students, the experience, the impact of that experience on the individual,….from a student-centric approach to one that constantly looks at numbers, where the markets are heading… a lot of the macro challenges, but fundamentally it is about very unique experience to a very unique individual. The important thing is not to lose the fact we are creating the opportunity to those who want to experience a different study and life outside of their home country.' She also shares insights into historical and current developments of TNE in Malaysia, and East Asia. In a previous school, leaders were allocated a certain number of leave days per year. This meant that I, and my colleagues, spent a lot of vacation time in school working, though perhaps not productively. When I joined ACS Cobham, I entered into a culture where leaders were encouraged to take a break when students left for vacation. This has had a lasting positive effect on my well-being and that of my colleagues. I am grateful to be part of an organisation that prioritises well-being and provides an environment that ensures it can happen. As school leaders, we often face high levels of stress due to the demands of our roles. Taking time off during holidays allows us to disconnect from work responsibilities, which can significantly reduce stress levels. Research shows that relaxation and positive feelings peak around eight days into a break, enabling leaders to return to work rejuvenated and more focused. A proper break can reset good habits and enhance productivity. When school leaders take time off, we return with renewed energy and creativity. This proactive approach to mental health helps maintain a positive school environment. Leaders who take breaks often find themselves thinking more innovatively upon their return, which can lead to new ideas and strategies for improving school culture and student outcomes. Engaging in leisure activities or simply relaxing allows the brain to process information differently, enhancing creative thinking. Holidays provide an opportunity for school leaders to reconnect with family and friends. Strengthening these relationships can improve overall happiness and well-being, which is beneficial not only personally but also professionally. A supportive social network contributes significantly to better mental health. Now that our school looks like the photo with no students around and faculty leaving to start their break in a few hours, I am encouraging out leaders to take some time to focus on their own well-being and not on their jobs. We will all work during this break, but it will be done at a time that suits us and in places away from our offices. We will all return rested, energised and ready to inspire the world’s next thinkers and doers.

How can we ensure that the skills and competencies imparted by universities remain relevant in the face of technological advancements? It was great learning and networking at the Coventry University Singapore Hub's 'Unleashing the leader within' Dialogue series, focused on Leadership in higher education. Bringing together senior leaders from UK and Singapore's Higher Education institutions, we discussed current trends, pressing challenges and possible opportunities in today's HE sector. Here are the main takeaways from this informative session: - The higher education landscape is undergoing significant transformation. As the world becomes more interconnected and technology-driven, graduates require evolving competencies to keep up with the changes. - Industry partnerships and student preparedness for the workplace are paramount. Higher education institutions must ensure students are equipped with the right skills and mind sets for the demands of the working world. - Holistic education is essential. Graduates need to be multi-literate, digitally fluent, and emotionally intelligent. - Staff empowerment is crucial. Training and development will enable staff to support students effectively. - Last but not least, leadership plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of higher education. Creative, holistic, and committed leadership will guide institutions through these challenging times. In today's workshop for Chinese educators on the critical topic of time utilisation, I presented some eye-opening statistics that highlight the future our children face unless we rethink how they spend their time and what we model for them. Recent research reveals that our children will spend approximately one-third of their lives—336 months—in bed sleeping. Alarmingly, unless we start to think differently, they will spend almost the same amount of time looking at a screen. The power of influence lies with the adults in our children's lives. Our responsibility is to guide them in making wise choices about how they spend their time during the roughly 1000 months they have on this planet. Social, Emotional & Self-Identity Development in Early Years Foundation Stage A common theme across the schools we curate books for is that teaching literacy in the early years comes with its unique set of challenges. Maintaining children's interest and engagement in reading can be daunting. Their developmental stage and need for activity does not play well to their attention spans, something exacerbated by limited vocabulary and comprehension skills, stark individual differences and regularly changing preferences. As much as teaching empathy and social skills is a vital part of early childhood education, it is no mean feat due to limited life experience, natural egocentrism in children, and difficulty in regulating/dealing with emotions especially when they are complex. Where there is a lack of representation and relatability in literature, it undermines cultural and personal relevance. As a result, children can find it hard to connect and engage with the stories and characters. China visit, part 3: Fostering a Culture of Collaborative Intellectual Preparation I observed teachers in their subject specialisms working together, analysing a recent assessment paper their students had sat. They were “intellectually preparing” by identifying high-frequency errors their students were likely to make, so they could anticipate and address them. I was told that they often debated their views, which I believe is a valuable professional development exercise. Now consider the following for your school: 1. To what extent do UK teachers come together to discuss curriculum and assessment compared to focusing on administrative tasks? 2. How often do teachers thoroughly review assessments, anticipating high-frequency errors to target interventions? And do they collaborate passionately, sharing and debating their insights? 3. What could novice teachers learn from experts as a result of such an exercise? 4. Where could this exercise be formalised within the school structure to maximise its impact?

In the heart of PTTI, we believe learning is not just about following textbooks—it’s about connection, trust, and real support. Here’s a glimpse of that belief in action: Izmin and Nazuri, two of our dedicated SPM students, who took the initiative to come to our centre, not because they were forced or instructed, but because they wanted to be here. What’s truly inspiring is that they willingly came in during their school break, even as Diwali celebrations were happening around them. Instead of taking a break, they chose to focus on their studies, showing just how committed they are to achieving their goals. Izmin and Nazuri may not fit the ‘cream student’ label just yet, but they have something even more powerful—a genuine drive to succeed. They chose to be here, at PTTI, not just to study but to be in a space where they feel supported, encouraged, and most importantly, safe. They know they won’t face judgment or criticism for the things they struggle with; instead, they’ll find mentors who understand, who listen, and who guide them with patience. In these small but powerful moments—two peers sitting side by side, tackling challenges together—we see the spirit of what PTTI stands for. A place where every student feels they matter, that their journey is respected, and where even the smallest steps forward are celebrated.
