I recently came across these images of The Navajo by Edward Curtis taken just after 1900. From what I have read these are representations of different Gods for ceremony and dance. The information I have found for these photos varies. If anyone has a good reference please let me know. This man is a local and traditionnal witchdoctor ( pouri pouri man, or luri luri man) who has a special power with his father: thanks to a bamboo stick, they can ask it (the bamboo) to show them the guilty man or woman of a robbery. The bamboo shows them the way and lead them to the robber! They can also kill the guilty person with the bamboo.
