1. Prompt, tea makes everything better

The Art of Tea and Preventable Heartbreak

“Try it,” Rico cajoled the exhausted man who was sprawled on his couch, leaking pain out of his pores after yet another failed relationship; one day, hopefully, he would figure out what Rico already knew.

Sonny peered skeptically into the mug of chamomile tea that was handed to him, but shrugged and chugged it down, obviously too weary and heartsick to argue.

Ten minutes later, Rico was spreading a blanket over his slumbering partner and resisting the urge to kiss his forehead.

I glance over and see my favorite thing beginning to rise.
I have seen it so many times before, but it seems larger today.
Larger than life comes to mind.
My heart, my soul, and my body are warming up.
Oh, how I love this sight.
Nothing quite like it.
I lean over to see if I can touch without disturbing Jim.
It is a lost cause.
I want to touch it.
I need that in my life.
I don't see it enough.
I am sitting now with anticipation.
Can't keep still for anything.
I can't help it.
I have to wake Jim up.
No other choice.
"Jim, wake up, man."
He smiles at me and sees what I am looking at.
And he, in turn, sits up and looks at the sunrise too.
It is beautiful.

Wormer, Garden, Wood

Russel and his wife Karen called and came out this morning to cut wood. They are such nice people!  I showed them several options including a huge tree that is down right next to the road.
There is a lot of grass trying desperately to go to seed in my garden. Grass is supposed to start in Nov-Dec, grow only a little until early March and go to seed in late April or May. Instead there is grass 2 feet tall now, in January. A lot of grass has already been pulled out of the garden and added to the compost.  All that nice high-nitrogen grass has brought the compost up to a toasty 130F.  At that temperature there are millions of little microscopic organisms happily chomping away at the pile, aided and abetted by fungi.
I went down to Winter Quarters today, got Firefly and gave her a good grooming.  We had a short ride in the arena to review leg and weight aids. Afterward, back in Winter Quarters, I stopped to chat with Glenn who was there to exercise two horses. Such a nice person! Firefly had a little lesson in standing around waiting for me to finish talking. She is getting ever so much more patient.  Before I let her loose I gave her a dose of worm medicine, it is past time to do so. The wormer was apple flavored which helped a little (horses often object quite forcefully to having nasty paste squirted into their mouth). Firefly barely put up any resistance.  All the other horses on the place are getting their doses as well.  Throughout everything Firefly was really good.  She even stood quietly next to the fence as I crawled on her. (For non-horse riders: horses are smart. If they decide they don't want to be ridden they will step away from the fence or mounting block until trained to stand  by it quietly. Horses that are ridden with kindness and sensitivity learn that they don't need to dislike being ridden - it might be nice or even fun!)
Tomorrow the plan is to take the tractor down and groom the arena. Also spray the edges again.  Once that is done it will be time to hook up the post hole digger and see if it will dig some holes for me.  Some places may be fine, others may have too much rock for the auger to work.
Finger seems to be healing nicely so far. In this case the no-antibiotics approach appears to have worked well.  The nurse at the hospital cleaned the wound with a stream of saline solution, about 3 cups of it. The stitches were top dressed with a dab of Neosporin and a bandaid.  So much better than automatically giving a week's worth of oral antibiotics to absolutely everyone.

Warming Spices

Warming spices have hot, aromatic qualities. They encourage body heat; they go well with other thermogenic foods. Their scent evokes warmth and comfort. That makes them ideal for cold days. Browse a list of warming spices; you probably have some in your cabinet already. Here is a FAQ list. Screw winter, make something redolent.

1. I bought some purple sweet potato spread at work a couple months ago and hadn't used it yet because I had other toast toppings that needed to get used up first, but I finally tried it today and it's so good!

2. I took four walks today and walked almost ten miles total. It's really nice weather for it. Mostly cool and overcast, and though it was a bit sunnier around lunchtime it still wasn't really hot or glaring.

3. I wanted to walk somewhere for lunch today and go somewhere new, so I was just poking around at the maps app and seeing what was around and remembered this place called Pita House down the street that we'd wanted to try. I took a look at their menu as I was walking down and saw they have cheesy shawarma fries and that locked my decision in lol.

They were amazing. I still have half of them left, as well as a beef kebab and some pita, because the fries were listed as an appetizer so I thought it might be small, but I was wrong. The fries alone would be good for two people and the kebab was overkill. But now I have something to eat tomorrow for lunch as well.

4. I haven't seen the granola bar guy at the farmers market in a few weeks but he was there today. He said he was there a couple weeks ago, but that must have been a week I missed. He's got a new flavor, peanut butter and chocolate, and it's really good. I also got a couple of my favorite coconut macadamia ones.

5. Look at this blob!

Iron Lung, Markiplier's self financed adaptation of an indie horror game has had no ad buys or paid promotion. His goal was to get it on 50 screens. It will open on more than 2,500 and those showings are already selling out.

The above link is from a story that came out a week ago. According to the official site they are up to 2,805. That number may still grow.

The indie game based horror scene, it's a lot, yo.

The world is on fire, but after ICE murdered someone else in Minneapolis this morning, I called both my senators and also Chuck Schumer--I called him a coward and said we needed him to do better, giving my old Manhattan zip code. Apparently enough people made enough calls, and Schumer said an hour ago that Senate Democrats won't provide the votes for a funding bill that includes the Department of Homeland Security.

It seems likely that Alex Pritti's murder mattered to people who were prepared to overlook their murder of Renee Good, because it shows that while ICE is profoundly racist, a white man with a gun permit isn't safe either.

I can't do much for my friends in Minneapolis, but if there's something that would be useful, please ask.

ETA: After posting that, I realized I could afford to donate some money. So, I followed the links on Naomi Kritzer's recent post, donated $50 to Minnesota Rapid Response, and bought a bunch of dental floss to a group that was asking for that.

Lucy versus her father was really interesting. Her old morals and her new willingness to use violence, his manipulation and disgusting idea of peace.

Max and Thad were so much fun together, I really would have loved getting more of that. I have high hopes for the new trio of Max, Thad and the Ghoul for the next episode.

You know, the thing I-I can't figure out... is were you a monster back then? Or did you become one later? )

Something
comes into the world unwelcome
calling disorder, disorder—

If you hate me so much
don’t bother to give me
a name: do you need
one more slur
in your language, another
way to blame
one tribe for everything—

as we both know,
if you worship
one god, you only need
One enemy—

I’m not the enemy.
Only a ruse to ignore
what you see happening
right here in this bed,
a little paradigm
of failure. One of your precious flowers
dies here almost every day
and you can’t rest until
you attack the cause, meaning
whatever is left, whatever
happens to be sturdier
than your personal passion—

It was not meant
to last forever in the real world.
But why admit that, when you can go on
doing what you always do,
mourning and laying blame,
always the two together.

I don’t need your praise
to survive. I was here first,
before you were here, before
you ever planted a garden.
And I’ll be here when only the sun and moon
are left, and the sea, and the wide field.

I will constitute the field.
