Also, many Otomi individuals still practice shamanism and hold pre-Hispanic beliefs such as Nagualism. Nagualism is tied to the belief found in many indigenous cultures in southern Mexico that a person upon being born acquires a close spiritual link to an animal, which lasts throughout the lives of both creatures. The person shows signs of whatever the animal's situation to include scratches and bruises if the animals get in fights, or illness if the animal is ill. The animal can help the person in difficult or dangerous situations.This is important to understand the iconography or design featured in their embroidery art, which presents animals. It is also important to highlight that the Otomi people have traditionally subsisted on maize, beans and squash. They have a close relationship with their environment.
