🔑The serratus anterior is an important muscle that sits underneath your shoulder blade and wraps around the side to your ribs. It plays a significant role in keeping your scapula moving optimally when reaching overhead.
—-
🔎Sometimes when we don’t have optimal stability of the shoulder blade, the scapula can “wing out” leading to the popular term – scapular winging.
—
🤓Don’t view winging scapula as a diagnosis but instead a description of movement quality. Whenever I see a scapula winging out with clients of mine, I use it as a guide to investigate further if their shoulder stabilizers need a bit of strengthening.

Jenny Brennecke on Instagram: "Your immobile scapula is causing your shoulder pain!! 👀

Yes your MRI might show a labral tear, AC joint issues, torn rotator cuff, arthritis, xyz. But that doesn’t tell you the CAUSE of the pain - especially in a case of non traumatic shoulder pain. You’re only seeing the diagnosis and the result. 📝

YOU ARE NOT DEFINED BY YOUR DIAGNOSIS‼️

And there’s plenty of people who walk around with a completely clean MRIs, yet still have shoulder pain. 🤒

I have rarely seen a case of shoulder pain where the scapula wasn’t involved. If that joint - the scapulothoracic joint - cannot move properly or efficiently, unnecessary stress is put onto the shoulder joint itself, and the surrounding rotator cuff musculature. ❌🙅🏼‍♀️

Katie St.Clair - CSCS, CPT on Instagram: "Your scapula called and wanted to remind your rib cage that it prefers a nice round surface to move around.

When our ribs compress front to back it makes it very hard for our scapula to move along the rib cage.

This can lead to a winging scapula and eventually a scapula that rests in a more internally rotated, abducted, and anteriorly tipped position.

The superior fibers of serratus gain leverage and low to mid traps and serratus struggle to do their job.

The ball is compressing the lower ribs and creating expansion in the upper side.

Inhale fully and imagine expanding front, back, and side and then raise the arm and feel the scapula retract around.

Hold the inhale as you raise up and then exhale as you lower.
