On Memorial Day on Oahu, Hawaii at Ala Moana Beach Park, Honolulu/Waikiki, over 40,000 gather to join in the Japanese Floating Lantern Ceremony. This marks 15th year that the Shinnyo-en Buddhist Order has held this Memorial Day Ceremony. The Ceremony is drawn from ancient Asian religious tradition but has a contemporary feel.
