Learn about the dispersion of light, the electromagnetic spectrum, and how sunlight contains a range of wavelengths (photons of differing energy) with this video segment from Shedding Light on Science. Isaac Newton investigated sunlight by shining it through a glass prism; after the prism refracted the light, he saw a spectrum of colors. He recognized that sunlight was made up of many colors, which could not be further separated when passed through a second prism. Drops of water in the air…

Colour - Visible Spectrum, Wavelengths, Hues: Newton demonstrated that colour is a quality of light. To understand colour, therefore, it is necessary to know something about light. As a form of electromagnetic radiation, light has properties in common with both waves and particles. It can be thought of as a stream of minute energy packets radiated at varying frequencies in a wave motion. Any given beam of light has specific values of frequency, wavelength, and energy associated with it…

the light is shining brightly in the dark room with only one color visible on it

In 1666 Sir Isaac Newton studied the effect of passing a beam of light through a triangular glass prism. He completely darkened his study and made a small hole in the window shutters to let in a fine beam of sunlight. He then held a glass prism in the beam and noticed that a brilliant spectrum of colours, from red to violet, formed on the wall at the other side of the room. In his own words (taken from a letter to the Royal Society): It was at first a very pleasing divertissement, to view…
