Creative self portrait art

Here is just a small selection of the mixed media self portraits produced by last years Year 7 in the Summer Term. The theme was 'Split Personality' and the pupils produced a portrait consisting of four different mediums (acrylic, pencil, fine-liner and collage). They also wrote in the background of two of the sections. The writing in pencil was that students' dislikes, whilst the writing in fine-liner was their loves. Within this self-portrait, I am exploring the complexity of my seemingly simple thoughts or daydreams. I am contrasting my outer, bored expression with the chaotic, whimsical doodles in the background that symbolize my daydreams. This goes to show that even when I look unengaged on the outside, my brain is thinking a surplus of thoughts and ideas. How can Tony Luciani, a man that was not a photographer, create photographs of his mother that would evoke all encompassing emotions worldwide?

Liz Y Ahmet is a UK-based, self-taught artist who creates portraits of women from hundreds of scribbled lines. What looks chaotic and even a little bit messy at first glance, with the talented hands and creative mind of this contemporary artist, emerges into perfectly detailed, expressive, and dynamic portraits. It's amazing how looping and scattered lines we used to draw as children can convey such strong emotions.

Yoon Ji Seon's embroidered portraits blend fiber and photography. Much of work consists of self-portraits, with varying degrees of emotions, abstraction, and detail. Her "Rag Face" series goes back to 2006, when she started experimenting with these mixed-media pieces.
