There are two main problems with turning plates. The first is the rim may have a slight wobble and if you turn it rim down on the wheel you just repeat the wobble. The second is that plates are fragile. Both the main flat area and the rim. Welcome the ring chuck. Made to be about the size of the inside of the plate this donut shaped ring will both protect the plate and the rim and allow you to turn with the plate base as the guage. Not the rim. Does that make sense? This one is made from clay thrown to shape. It’s kept dry and when I want to use it I just dip the base in water. It then sticks to the wheel Ceramic Plates Wheel Thrown, Throwing Plates On The Wheel, Pottery Videos, Donut Shape, Pottery Glazes, Desserts To Make, Pottery Wheel, Ceramic Studio, Hand Shapes

Cheri Downey | Ceramicist on Instagram: "Large Dinner Plate: Slab/Wheel Method ✨ Since I’m in the middle of a huge order, I thought I’d show you all the slab plate method again. It’s just so simple and fun! Some questions I’ve been getting: I get a lot of questions about drying to avoid warping. There isn’t really much to show you all. I usually will just add some weight if they start to warp around leather hard and that brings them back down. I’ve also noticed that the bottoms tend to flatten out in my glaze fire as long as the whole plate is fully on the kiln shelf. At leather hard, I just smoothen the bottoms and I don’t trim or add a foot. I like the bottom to be flat. This clay is Laguna #50, it will be speckled at the final result! #ceramics #pottery #potteryasmr #supportsm Ceramic Dinner Plates Handmade, Throwing A Plate On The Wheel, Throwing Plates On The Wheel, Pottery Plate Designs, Pottery Bowl Designs, Simple Pottery Ideas, Pottery Wheel Ideas, Plate Method, Plate Clay

Laima Ceramics on Instagram: "When you are making 300 plates for a restaurant you get inventive about how to make this process more efficient 🙃 Step-by-step video for easy wheelthrown plates with no trimming required (!!!) 1. Prepare slab rolled stoneware slabs (5-7mm for stoneware) with 1-2cm extra around the edges and dry them enough that they are not sticky anymore but still soft enough to bend slightly (takes at least 4hours) 2. Place on coated plywood boards or similar 3. Stick 3 blobs of clay on the wheel (best if the wheel size is identical to the board size- makes centering not necessary 😉) 4. Put the board on the wheel and tap lightly 5. Measure with callipers (I cut 32cm for final size 28cm plate (after firing) and 27.5cm for 24cm final size plate) 6.
