The Akari 10A Floor Lamp is part of the Akari light sculptures, designed in 1951 by the American Japanese artist and designer Isamu Noguchi. He chose the name Akari for these objects, a word that means light in Japanese, connoting both illumination and physical lightness. The inspiration for the design of his lights stems from a visit to the Japanese fishing village of Gifu, where Noguchi watched the fishermen at work. While Isamu Noguchi first introduced the Akari lamp series in 1951, the waterdrop-shaped 23N wasn’t created until 1968. To this day, Akari lamps are still handmade in Japan of washi paper and bamboo ribbing by original lantern makers Ozeki & Co., Ltd. (est. 1891).
