I treat new Dolo2K songs like daily comic strips: Every time I click I wonder what mundane activity or dilemma is on the L.A.-based rapper and producer’s mind now. The low stakes and ordinary stories make his spacey, melodic rap feel down-to-Earth. On The Imagining Project, the things on his mind range from girl problems to trying to hit big on a parlay. Most of the time he seems to just wander around, in his head, as the fantastical self-produced beats (under the alias Carvacio) sputter and unspool. “Just woke up high as fuck I’m playing Tekken 2,” he sing-raps in the opening line of early favorite “The Silver Case.” A few existential thoughts come and go, and later he decides that he wants to buy Tekken 8. Sounds a lot like my uneventful Sunday mornings.
