A Little Late But A Finish None The Less

I was glad to get Myra's post this morning that the PHD blog will stay up for awhile longer for the late finishes.  I am glad to get to post an update on this one and happy to say that my Underground Railroad and Pioneer Samplers are finally done!

UGRR Side

Pioneer Side

These hang back to back for a reversible quilt.

I even figured out how to add a label.

I am very happy to have gotten this one done.  The original announcement of this challenge had pushed me (even after being interrupted by a move) to take the finished blocks, make up the fabric printed portions and get them into finished tops and layered.  Guilt over not moving on to the quilting of it even with the TWO extensions to the challenge, always kept this in the back of my mind even as I moved on to new projects.  This year I decided that I REALLY wanted to get it finished and pushed forward with my plans to hand quilt it (although scaling that back a bit in favor of getting it done sooner).  You can read about the process details here.

I love looking at these everyday, periodically flipping it from one side to the other!  It is the first in a series of civil war era fabric quilts I hope to display in my home.  Having this one up where I can see it each day is spurring me to get to work on the rest of them (the next one to be worked on is here).

Big thanks to Myra for hosting this challenge and keeping it going!  I don't know when or if I would have seriously worked on the blocks or have kept the fires for this burning if I had not enlisted in this.  If you also still have finishes to tackle (and I sure do), know that there is still time and it's never too late to get them done!

January 2013...

Hello PhD Participants!

I had been taking a hiatus from blogging, as I am sure you've all noticed, but am slowly making my way back. I'm not doing another PhD Challenge, but will leave this blog up if you'd like to post any finishes that were a long time in coming for you.

The blog sidebars and such, will have a few items/numbers omitted, but I will leave your links up for viewers to link to. Just to clean the blog up some because the challenge has long been done.

Thanks to all that had participated.

Myra

Finished 7/12 - Delayed Post

I forgot to post this finish on your blog....Sorry Myra...This is one of the two Quilt Alongs I had listed.   The other one has taken a back seat to several other projects/quilts, but I plan to remedy that soon.

I am showing first the front....

and then the back -

I had several large pieces left over from the front so I incorporated it on the back.  Honestly, now that I think about it, I wish I didn't put the label on it, so it could be a double sided quilt.  But it still can be...

This is the 4th finished project that I listed, only one more to go.....Thanks for keeping this blog available...Things do get done and it makes me feel good that they do.

Elizabeth's Ph.D's: Finish № Four (Finally!)

It is easier to go down a hill than up, but the view is best from the top. –Arnold Bennett

I'm only 14 months late, but my fourth and final quilt from the challenge is finished, bound, washed, blocked and folded neatly waiting for the right occasion to be used.

The quilt is called In the Pink: A Study in Pinwheels. I finished the quilting last Tuesday. I washed and blocked it on Wednesday. It wasn't dry until Friday. And there was finally good light to photograph it today.

I'm sort of at a loss for words. The only ones that come to mind are . . . terminus . . . finished . . . completed . . . finito . . . done. Those are happy words.

There's really not much more to say anyway. I've pretty much said it all in the 2¾ years it has taken me to make this quilt. Here are links to all the posts about this quilt. Yeah. It's been one epic quilt in the making.

Another finish, finally! The Double Wedding Ring Quilt

I am pleased to announce I  finally have another finish and it's a big one.  A king-sized, big one. It's taken me 4 years (some years with no work at all) to finish this baby but the desire to finish it up for this Challenge blog has kept me motivated, even if late, to get it posted for you.

A longer blog post about it can be found here but for now, enjoy the pictures.

Thanks, Myra, for keeping this blog up!

Oh yeah....

Another one for Ann Marie. I really need me a calendar to keep up with all the different blogs I need to post things on. This make 3 for me off that list. I am still looking to see if I finished more or not. This time it was the red and white front that ended up being the back, because I made it into a COCA-COLA quilt for my best friend AMY! She is such a coke addict!!!  Click HERE to check it out!

Finish #6 of 9 :-)

I found my binding fabric!

under several other stacks of fabric!!!

Feedback...

Well, it seems there is some interest in joining me to recommit and finish up our 2011 PhDs that did not make it to the "DONE" or "FINISHED" stage during this 2011 year.

There is quite a few of us in this boat, so lets all get paddling as soon as the year end festivities are over, and get those PhDs done!!

If we can collectively get at least 75 of the 157 remaining PhDs done, I'll consider starting a new 2012 PhD Challenge, where we can commit to completing some new PhDs, and take on new participants...

So, anyone new wanting to join in on a 2012 PhD Challenge later in the year, and present participants, do your part by cheering us on through comments when we post our FINISHES.
We need all the help we can get!

You can see my 3 PhDs (of the 6 committed) that still need to be completed, by clicking on this link... There are links there to the 3 projects I managed to get done already...

Wishing you a very merry Christmas, and the best of 2012!

Happy stitching!
Myra

Sliding Into The Finish Line

PhD number 4.

This quilt was a stack and slash I did at the end of 2006 so it's been a UFO for some time. Last month it became my first quilt on the frame and after some trials the quilting was completed. Monday I machined the binding and last night finished hand stitching the binding on the back and ta da! "Citrus Splash" is a UFO no more.

Looking forward to tackling number 5 in the new year but will have to take it shopping with me first to find some sashing/border fabrics.

My calendar quilt will be number 5 as it's required for a local quilt exhibition towards the end of 2012. Above are the months of April, May and June ... one 1" strip for each day of the month. All 12 months are completed and have the name of the month embroidered at the top.

A late finish here, too!

I had a Dec. finish myself. I finished my summer porch quilt. I changed the border on it from this:
to the border in this finished version and I love it.
I think the fact that I wasn't in love with the original border was part of what kept me from quilting it.  I'm so glad I waited on this one and now it's part of my living room quilt ensemble.
(You can read baout that in this post.)

Happy Holidays, everyone!

A FiNaL FiNisH

WooHoo... I've finished my LAST PhD... and just in time too. I had forgotten to post a pic of "Family Matters" until I read Myra's last post... so here it is.
It was originally going to be a wall hanging... but I changed it to a lap quilt as I thought it would get better use that way. The original block that I showed was the one in the bottom left corner. I added the "hearts" after I joined into the PhD group. I'm really happy I did change the plan because it turned out really well... (I think it did anyways) and I hope the recipient will too!
Merry Christmas EvEryOnE... and a special ThAnK YoU to Myra.
