Create tool to help improve readability for a given wiki page
Open, LowestPublic

Description

In order to check the readability of the content of a wiki page, one currently needs to use external tools like readability-score.com or the Hemingway app.

It would be convenient to have an interactive tool that can be invoked more easily on a given wiki page, so as to avoid constant back-and-forth copy-and-paste between the edit window and a third-party tool. This could also potentially work in VisualEditor, if we wanted.

The code behind readability-score.com is available under a free license, and there's also a JavaScript port. This tool is specific to the English language, but I seem to remember attempts to develop formulas for other languages as well.

Improving readability using those tools is done every week to write (and simplify) Tech News. Other areas of technical communication (like T90263: Improve glossaries to better help Wikimedia editors understand technical terms) could also benefit from this.

@gpaumier Fit for a 3-month GSoC/Outreachy round? Could you add anyone here who could possibly mentor this?

No, like T91335, this is a small project with a scope much too small for a 3-month period. Copying what I wrote in that other ticket:

This is something I wrote with the Wikimedia-Hackathon-2015 or Wikimania-Hackathon-2015 in mind, meaning the bulk of it could be done in a few days, maybe a week at most.

Please confirm and promote this activity by assigning it to its owner, listing it or scheduling it at the Hackathon wiki page and by placing it in the right column at Wikimania-Hackathon-2015. Thank you!

Un-assigning and removing the Hackathon tag since this is unlikely to be my hackathon project. I might do it afterwards, but in the meantime it's up for grabs.

This is a message posted to all tasks under "Need Discussion" at Possible-Tech-Projects. Outreachy-Round-11 is around the corner. If you want to propose this task as a featured project idea, we need a clear plan with community support, and two mentors willing to support it.

This is a message sent to all Possible-Tech-Projects. The new round of Wikimedia Individual Engagement Grants is open until 29 Sep. For the first time, technical projects are within scope, thanks to the feedback received at Wikimania 2015, before, and after (T105414). If someone is interested in obtaining funds to push this task, this might be a good way.

IMPORTANT: This is a message posted to all tasks under "Need Discussion" at Possible-Tech-Projects. Wikimedia has been accepted as a mentor organization for GSoC '16. If you want to propose this task as a featured project idea, we need a clear plan with community support, and two mentors willing to support it.

Any development on this so far?

Something like this would also be helpful for people translating pages into Simple English for the Simple English Wikipedia. Editors at that wiki might be willing to help with testing.
