Get Mad
I've been sitting on this for a week. Thinking. Reflecting. Asking my reptile brain amygdala (thanks fight/flight response!) to take a break so that my frontal cortex could chime in with some empathy and connected mammalian ideas. I've slept on it – several times. I suggest you do the same. And then we must resolve "to be" in the time we have remaining before "not to be" comes for all of us. Our society will not recover or improve without us.The video evidence is no more or less disputable th...

An Updated Dentist Office Software Story
Back in 2014, I wrote a post called The Dentist Office Software Story that outlined the lack of defensibility in enterprise software. Many people have told me how much they appreciated it when I wrote it. But we now need an additional "chapter" in the story. An over-the-air update, if you will. So here it is, with the new chapter in italics: An entrepreneur, tired of the long waits he is experiencing in his dentist’s office, decides that dentist offices are badly managed. So he designs and bu...

Ontario proposes to pause Inclusionary Zoning policy in three municipalities
Oh boy, have we spoken a lot about inclusionary zoning over the years (see here, here, and the full list of 43 posts that I have tagged with "inclusionary zoning" here). Politicians tend to like this policy because they can present it as no-cost or "free" affordable housing. Few people have much sympathy for real estate developers, so it's easy to just say, "Don't worry, we'll just get the developers to pay for it." But the reality of inclusionary zoning is that you need a robust housing mark...

👁️ For Trump, Fascism is Just Another Scam
Welcome to the weekly Dark Markets Tuesday edition. Today we’re doing something slightly different: after a week when the fascism of the U.S. government became nakedly clear, it’s time to talk about why fraudsters are so often authoritarians. I can’t resist highlighting one bit of news, though - former NYC Mayor Eric Adams is alleged to have “rug pulled” his new anti-semitism memecoin for about $2.3 million. Yes, really.Book Talk - Codex Books, January 15th, 7pmCome see me talk with Adam Lowe...

Coming full circle
There is a strange, beautiful kind of nostalgia in returning to a place that once held your hopes for your child’s future. This week, our family took a step back in time and a giant leap forward. My son, Sheamus, is at a massive crossroads. He’s 16, standing on the edge of adulthood with his 17th birthday quickly approaching on February 8th. As he prepares for that final stretch of his teenage years, I realized that the support he had as a toddler was exactly what he needed again to navigate ...

EPL GW21: Winners And Losers
The most anticipated fixture this gameweek, between defending Champions Liverpool and title aspirants, played out in a rather uneventful 0-0 draw. That notwithstanding, there was drama elsewhere as several mid-table clashes unfolded across the table, giving us a better idea of who is actually in the race for European spots and who isn't. Here are all the winners and losers from the gameweek's action.Winners: AFC Bournemouth A win for the Cherries, finally. And, perhaps fittingly, it came in t...

It's a long game
Conventional wisdom suggests that the way to get really good at something is to (1) start as early as possible learning the thing and (2) focus exclusively on the thing. This is relevant information for elite schools, sport academies, and other institutions because it leads to, "let's find the best young talent and then further accelerate their skills through discipline-specific practice." But recent research has found that this typically isn't the case. By looking at more than 34,000 adult i...

Stocks just overtook homes as the main source of US household wealth
My dad sent me an article from Canoe Financial over the weekend that included the chart below. What it shows is that corporate equities and mutual fund shares now make up a greater percentage of household wealth in the US than residential real estate for only the second time since 1990. From a macro perspective, and when you consider the popularity of index funds, this means that American households probably have a lot of their wealth concentrated in high-growth tech stocks. And since these s...
