Note: The Interactive Scientific Publishing (ISP) program was initiated by past president Tom Baer and involved collaboration with the National Institutes of Health and Kitware, Inc. The first ISP articles were published in 2008, and more information about this program is available here: T. Baer, "President's Message," Opt. Photon. News, p. 4 (February 2009), p. 4.

What Is ISP?

We are pleased to announce a new paradigm for the publication of scientific images —Interactive Scientific Publishing (ISP). With support from the NIH National Library of Medicine, ISP allows authors to publish large 2D and 3D datasets with original source data that can be viewed and analyzed interactively by readers. ISP provides the software for authors to organize and publish source data while offering readers the viewing and analysis tools. See the ISP FAQs for more information.

  • Interact with 2D and 3D image data.
  • Engage more thoroughly with research results.
  • View ISP images and data for free!

How to Read an ISP Article

  1. Get the OSA ISP software for Windows or Mac.
  2. Find an ISP-enabled article. See ISP articles on this page, or use our advanced search along with the "ISP" filter.
  3. Open the article and locate links such as "View 1." Clicking the links will launch the data views in OSA ISP.
  4. Explore the MIDAS database to see source data associated with the articles.

See the ISP FAQs for more information.

ISP Software

OSA ISP Software and the ISP MIDAS Database were developed by Optica in cooperation with Kitware, Inc., and with support from the National Library of Medicine.
