Santiago Matamoros, oil-on-canvas, 18th c. New Orleans Museum of Art, Museum Purchase. This painting, most likely from Cuzco, depicts Santiago Matamoros (the "Moor-slayer") trampling Muslims during the Reconquest in Spain. Santiago was also important in the Americas as a symbol of militant Christianity. Spanish soldiers believed they saw him during a battle against the Incas in the 1500s that they subsequently won. Santiago was seen as a symbol of the triumph of the Church over "enemies". But I was recently offered the chance to visit a clothing factory that defies all expectations and conventional wisdom around outsourcing, and shows that there can be a different way when it comes to manufacturing. That was the Saint James factory in Normandy, France.
