Joseph Niepce

In 1826, Niépce used his heliography process to capture the first photograph, but his pioneering work was soon to be overshadowed by the invention of the daguerreotype.

Daguerre had began experimenting with ways of fixing the images formed by the camera obscura around 1824, but in 1829 he entered into partnership with Joseph Nicephore Niepce (1765-1833), a French amateur scientist and inventor who, in 1826, had succeeded in securing a picture of the view from his window by using a a camera obscura and a pewter plate coated with bitumen.

Nicephore Niepce, French inventor who was the first to make a permanent photographic image. He later formed a partnership with Louis-Jacques-Mande Daguerre, a Parisian painter, who, after Niepce’s death, built on his knowledge and eventually invented the daguerreotype, the first successful form of photography.
