Maryland Cottage Garden Design on Instagram: "Don’t let your climbing roses grow straight toward the sky. Climbers must be trained horizontally to a 45 degree angle in order to bloom along the entire stem. If they grow vertically, you will only get a flower at the tip of the cane!

It’s best to train stems when they’re young and flexible. Once they’re older, they solidify into hard branches you can’t move.

Pay attention to your climbing roses and train them once a month from spring through fall. Weave the canes so they fill in gaps and don’t compete for sunlight or airflow. Wear gloves or you’ll get a ton of splinters and cuts!

Maryland Cottage Garden Design on Instagram: "Do you know how to properly train your climbing roses so they bloom from top to bottom?

Here’s the key: you must train your rose stems horizontally to a 45-degree angle. They also have to have the support of a wire or fixed trellis, or statue/obelisk.

Why bend them back and forth when the goal is a long trail of roses? Well, when climbing roses grow vertically, they only develop flower buds at the tips of each stem. When trained horizontally to 45 degrees, the stems grow offshoots which produce more flowers and give you that epic, dripping in roses look. 😍

When training roses, always wear leather gauntlets and long sleeves! They’re so sharp and will give you itchy scrapes and splinters. (Gloves linked in my Amazon shop).
