If you’ve ever felt pain or soreness on the inside of your knee/slightly below it, it might related to the “pes anserinus.”

The PA refers to the tendinous insertions of the sartorius, gracilis, and semitendinosus muscles. These three muscles all cross the knee and assist with knee flexion/hip adduction.

Symptoms of PA-related pain include tenderness, swelling, pain with knee extension/flexion or activity, or weakness in surrounding muscles.

This area can become symptomatic due to injury or secondary to other knee conditions, namely meniscus tears, osteoarthritis, or tendinopathy of any of these muscles. The underlying bursa may also become irritated (bursitis).
