Eli Yovits OTR/L, CHT on Instagram: "💥The Stiff Finger - Pseudo Claw Deformity💥  ▪️Pseudo claw is a claw like presentation of the finger due to PIP contracture and/or tendon adhesions (often from a metacarpal or proximal phalanx fracture) resulting in compensatory MCP hyperextension and IP flexion.   ▪️It is similar in appearance to a claw hand that you may see with a deficient ulnar nerve, however the pseudo claw is not nerve related  ▪️Serial casting was used to straighten the finger with amazing results!   ▪️Since achieving full ROM and strengthening the fist were also goals, some of the exercises incorporated were finger flexion/extension with putty, dowel gliding for ROM/dexterity, intrinsic strengthening, and a PIP/DIP strap to obtain the end range hook fist  ▪️If finger extension

It is a very functional gripping position that if lost can be quite debilitating!   ▪️These are some of my favorite exercises for regaining ROM and strength in a hook fist. ☄️This is a 2 lb mediball. All exercises can be graded down by using a regular ball with no extra weight, or graded up by increasing the weight in the balance.

1️⃣Weight bearing onto the ball on a table with circles in both directions. You can get weight bearing benefits and some wrist extension

2️⃣Grade up by doing the same exercise on the wall. You need increased shoulder and wrist stability for this

3️⃣At the end of the last exercise, lock your shoulder and elbow and slowly roll your fingers down the ball until you have composite extension stretch. Now you have weight bearing, stabilization, and wrist extension stretch all in one!
