The one thing I wanted and planned to do during the holidays that I did not do was migrate to a new VPS. It simply didn’t happen. And that’s fine; it will have to be. In fact, it’s for the best, because I am certain I don’t want to be on the Fediverse anymore—which is a service I would have migrated had I proceeded as planned.

I don’t quite have my bearings in 2026 yet, but I trust I will soon.

Today, the neighbour across the street messaged me that the garage door was open. I replied “Thank you! 🙏🏻”, and closed it. He reacted with the 🚾 emoji. He meant “welcome”, but I strongly believe he doesn’t know what that emoji means 🤭.

Donut Lab’s all-solid-state battery delivers 400 Wh/kg of energy density, enabling longer range, lighter structures, and unprecedented flexibility in vehicle and product design. It can be charged to full in just five minutes without limiting charging to 80%, and supports full discharge safely, repeatedly, and reliably.

And:

Unlike conventional lithium-ion batteries, the Donut Battery experiences minimal capacity fade over its lifetime, with a design life of up to 100,000 cycles, offering practical longevity that far exceeds existing technologies. Safety is built in at the core: no flammable liquid electrolytes, no thermal runaway chains, and no metallic dendrites. This eliminates the root causes of battery fires, making the Donut Battery extremely safe and truly revolutionary.

And:

Performance has been rigorously tested across extreme conditions. At –30°C, the battery retains over 99% of its capacity, and when heated to temperatures exceeding 100°C, it continues to retain over 99% capacity with no signs of ignition or degradation.

The Donut Lab solid state battery is made entirely from abundant, affordable, and geopolitically safe materials, does not rely on rare or sensitive elements, and demonstrates a lower cost than lithium-ion.

I had to quote all of that because it sounds incredible; it addresses battery issues found in the current leading EVs. I truly want to believe: we need better, affordable, and abundant batteries. Yet, we will have to wait and see.

Sitting alone in a café without distractions reveals a lot about people. The same people you pass by in a split second while rushing from home to work, from a meeting to a meeting. The invisible suddenly appears right in front of you. People don’t go away in two seconds. They stay. They sip a coffee. They talk with others, laugh, cry, and worry. Oh, worry.

Worry is only visible in people’s eyes. Eyes are the channel of the heart. You have to close your ears and look at people’s eyes to see their hearts.

I liked that post. I like sitting alone, quietly, leaving rush behind. It doesn’t have to be in a café, it can be anywhere.

Last note of 2025. Happy new 2026, everyone! We watched quite a few movies and series during this break. I will try to remember and recollect some of them later next year. Time, as always, seems to have slipped through fingers; simply incredible.

For the first time the boy isn’t spending the new year’s evening with us. There is a time for everything, right? Still, it feels odd, and we miss him very, very much. We miss the girl too.

Photo of the Utopia of the Seas, a Royal Caribbean cruise ship.

Recently we went on holidays on a cruise ship. Saying that I didn’t enjoy the small break would be a lie, yet, over and over, this kept haunting me. After having fun, or feeling happy, I couldn’t help feeling guilty. Is it fair to have fun, when so many people suffer? With so much tragedy, wars, and seemingly hopeless, unforeseen future for many, how can I be happy without regrets?

Diablo 4 Paladin class. Credit Blizzard.

Two, or three days ago Blizzard announced Diablo 4 next expansion, and with it the so much expected, and desired, paladin class—there will be another, but they have not disclosed it yet. The kick, and trick, is that the class is playable now, as long as one pre-orders the expansion. Needless is to say that Gawain, which is my paladin’s name, is level 55 now.

I have been playing it with abandon, simply having fun and experimenting with the class. And lots of fun it is!

We ended up buying another Google Nest video doorbell (3rd generation) because a) was the cheapest (with holidays discounts), and b) we do not have to pay anything extra per month to keep 30 days worth of video events. Our old one was HD, the new one is 2K. The difference is night and day.

AT&T is offering us, for a bargain price of $25 in addition to what we already pay, to upgrade to their “most advanced Wi-Fi package”, which is pretty much a device upgrade to one that supports Wi-Fi 7. The thing is, we don’t use their Wi-Fi, we have our own router, and access point, and almost none of our devices supports Wi-Fi 7 yet. I wonder how many will bite on that offer not knowing any better.

On Anthony Bourdain’s Lost Li.st you can find a few things of interest. I wish there was more, as I liked Anthony very much. On his dinner with Obama in Hanoi, Vietnam:

“The reaction among regular people in Hanoi to the fact that the US President chose to eat Bún chả was beyond all imagining. The effect was unbelievable. People were actually crying the next day, describing to me their shock and their pride, the reactions of their neighbors, to this completely unexpected choice of meal—and the venue.”

I have eaten Bún chả, and it is delicious. There is another similar plate that has more protein (shrimps and eggrolls, in addition to grilled pork) whose name escapes me now, which is a favourite of mine. But I digress.
